Whether June Weisberger is tutoring students at Madison’s Hawthorne or at Midvale elementary schools, the retired professor from the University of Wisconsin Law School relishes the knowledge she collects.
“The early grades are important in giving kids a start academically and socially,” she said. “Parents play an important role in supporting their children’s efforts in school.”

An organizer of the 700- member UW-Madison Retirement Association, Weisberger, 75, is an example of how students benefit when businesses and nonprofit organizations “adopt” schools, an initiative created by the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools and modeled after a similar project in the New York City Public Schools.
