Five Memorial Union workers were charged with misdemeanor theft Wednesday for allegedly skimming cash register receipts from the bar at the Union’s Stiftskeller – including a $10 bill a police officer used to buy beer while investigating the thefts.
One of the men charged told police that skimming from the till was “the culture of the Stiftskeller” and is a widespread practice, according to a criminal complaint filed in Dane County Circuit Court.
