Fraternities claim to be character-building organizations focused on brotherhood and philanthropy, but every week brings another story of misconduct. In the past few months, authorities shut down a cocaine-trafficking ring operating out of two Penn State fraternities, two fraternity brothers at University of Wisconsin-Madison were arrested for a hazing ritual that involved locking pledges, covered in food, in a hot basement, and former Cornell University student “Jane Doe” filed a lawsuit alleging she was drugged and gang-raped by seven fraternity brothers after a party. Given the pattern, universities would do well to disband these organizations.
