Judge frees man after 23 years

A man convicted of a 1984 homicide walked out of prison and hugged his sister Friday, after a judge released him partly because of evidence that the Wisconsin Innocence Project uncovered.

A Milwaukee County jury convicted Robert Lee Stinson of first-degree murder more than 23 years ago in the death of Ione Cychosz, 62, who had been beaten, stabbed and bitten when a neighbor discovered her body in a vacant lot behind her house. Stinson, 21 at the time of his arrest, proclaimed his innocence from the witness stand and hasn’t wavered.
