Joan Isabel Vass was born in New York City on May 19, 1925, the only child of Max and Rose Kaplan, who owned several laundries in Brooklyn called Square Deal. She was a philosophy major at the University of Wisconsin, where she met Mr. Vass and married him before completing a thesis on Kierkegaard.
