In 1947, Matt became the manager of the UW College of Agriculture Experimental Farms on campus, as well as the “Hill Farms” area. He received his M.S. degree during this time. In 1955, as the city of Madison was expanding westward, the University sold the “Hill Farms” area and purchased nine farms in the Arlington Prairie. Matt was instrumental in developing these farms into a world-renowned agricultural research station.
