With that motivation and skill on her side, Gray took a chance at auditioning for the UW Marching Band, hoping she’d find a special community within a school that has nearly 44,000 students.

If you’re a student at University of Wisconsin-Madison, university officials and your fellow students really want you to vote. And to make sure you do, they’re launching a week of voting events to make it easy.

Political science professor David Canon said young people usually vote in low numbers. “Eighteen to 34-year-olds vote at a rate of about half as much as say 50 to 60-year-olds and in recent elections, especially the last midterm elections, between about a sixth and a fifth of all young people, millennials, ended up voting,” Canon said.

Voter turnout on campus decreased in 2016.

UW senior Heidi Knoche said she attended the discussion because she views it as her social responsibility to learn about the perspectives of those outside of her community, particularly regarding domestic violence.

University of Wisconsin scholars and experts discussed immigration, citizenship and the economy in a panel called “What Makes America Great? Immigration, Citizenship and the Wisconsin Economy” at the Wisconsin Historical Society Monday.

The panel discussed how immigrants are a necessity to the Wisconsin workforce, especially in the dairy industry. In a market where farm laborers used to be paid $12-13 an hour, farms themselves are not making a great enough profit to be able to pay workers a fair amount, causing a labor shortage that immigrants are filling.
