After spending years studying at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Linh Nguyen, an international student from Vietnam, watched in recent days as his life fell into limbo.
“As someone who has benefited from White privilege, my first action must be to listen with humility and empathy – to faculty and staff, to students, and to others who love UW and also recognize its shortcomings,” Blank said in the statement. “Although the Black Lives Matter movement was the catalyst, these conversations touched on many issues and identities – Asian and Asian-American, Latinx, LGBTQ+, Native American and people with disabilities.”

The uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic has cost the University of Wisconsin football team a chance to play at one of the country’s storied stadiums.
The Badgers game with Northwestern scheduled for Nov. 7 will not be played at Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, the Cubs and Northwestern announced Wednesday. The game will be played on Northwestern’s campus at Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois. The start time has not been announced.
The University of Wisconsin athletic department has announced that more student-athletes have tested positive for Covid-19 since the school’s initial round of testing a month ago.
Northwestern’s athletic department and the Chicago Cubs announced Wednesday the decision to move the game, which is scheduled for Nov. 7. The move was made due to a number of uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
That number comes after 428 tests over the past month, the last time the athletic department released data regarding its COVID-19 testing. These individuals were quarantined and their recoveries are being monitored by UW Athletics’ Infection Response Team, and contact tracing was conducted to determine exposure to others. UW is not releasing figures regarding how many student-athletes are self-isolating due to exposure.

In March, Ellison partnered with Lennon Rodger, director of the Engineering Design Innovation Lab at UW–Madison, and Jesse Darley, a mechanical engineer at Madison design firm Delve, to create a face shield prototype using easily accessible materials. The team named the open source design the Badger Shield.
The team of researchers was selected in a two-round process. In the first part, the IFCN staff analyzed each proposal to make sure all the requirements were fulfilled. Then a committee composed of three professors — Lucas Graves, associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Steen Steensen, professor at OsloMet; and Bente Kalsnes, associate professor at Kristiania University College — evaluated the approved proposals and selected the top submissions. The winners came out of this group.
“It always made sense that this kind of contact might have happened, but demonstrating that it did happen is a different kind of thing,” says John Hawks, an anthropologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who did not participate in the study. With the addition of this genomic analysis, “we’re getting to the point where we can find evidence of some kinds of events that were invisible from an archaeological standpoint, and that’s exciting because it means that we now open another window into understanding human interactions and human contacts,” he adds.
“I think it still presents a substantial risk,” said Dr. James Conway, a pediatric infectious disease expert at UW-Madison. “Even though we’re a state that has relatively low rates certainly compared to the South and Southwest, the bringing together of people to a lot of different areas is really where you run the risk of introduction and then re-introduction of virus into particular communities.”
She went on to earn a PhD in food science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where she took classes in food chemistry, food engineering, protein chemistry, and dairy chemistry.
