UW-Madison epidemiologist Malia Jones named as Academic Staff Excellence award recipient

The University of Wisconsin-Madison System Board of Regents named epidemiologist Dr. Malia Jones as one of three recipients of the 2021 Academic Staff Excellence Awards. The award, which recognizes staff members and academic programs based on superior performance and creative, personable approaches to education, presents winners with a $7,500 cash prize. It is the highest honor the UW System can bestow upon their academic staff.

Scott Walker cuts ad encouraging Covid vaccination

UW Health, an academic medical system that is affiliated with the University of Wisconsin, which is behind the public service announcement, moved to cut the ad as the state attempts to address a sharp disparity in vaccination rates in different counties. In Wisconsin, some counties are seeing less than 30 percent vaccination rates while others are nearing 70 percent.

UW announces new service for student-athletes to profit off their work

According to a news release from the athletic department, they will provide YouDub to all student-athletes, a program developed in a partnership with athlete marketing firm Opendorse. According to new athletic director Chris McIntosh, YouDub will provide student-athletes with all necessary resources to earn money off of their work.

Quoted: It’s a conceptual theory to help explain how inequality gets reproduced and maintained in our society, not an approach to demonize one racial group. It is usually taught at the graduate level, said University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Kevin Lawrence Henry.

“Critical race theory becomes a catch-all for anything that’s about equity and addressing diversity and racial disparities and inequality,” he said. “It becomes a kind of boogeyman or straw man about how we are indoctrinating children in schools, but in fact, critical race theory is not taught in the K-12 arena.”

Michael Smith, a Voice for Justice Reform, Is Dead at 78

After leaving Vera, Mr. Smith taught at the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison until 2009. In addition to his wife, whom he met when she was a law professor there, he is survived by his son, Graham; his daughter, Charlotte Smith; a stepson, Kinkaid Kruse-Frink; a stepdaughter, Evelyn Rose Livermore; and a sister, Catherine Sheridan Smith.
