An effort to expand higher education offerings for state prison inmates is taking shape under interim University of Wisconsin President Tommy Thompson, who oversaw the largest expansion of prisons in the state’s history during his 14 years as governor.
“The university tries to represent and show its diversity. In the end, it doesn’t come out because there is not a lot of diversity on this campus,” Adegoke said. “In my opinion, it doesn’t really show because I’m usually the only Black person in (a) class.”
As UW implements promising forensic nurse program, students, campus advocates say adequate support for survivors still requires more institutional resources.

If you only read the national news, you could be excused for thinking that climate change is solely a coastal problem. While hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, freak snowstorms on the East Coast and wildfires in the West grab the headlines, the flyover country in the Midwest faces its own set of challenges. Thirty local governments, academic institutions and nonprofits from the space between the Appalachians and the Great Plains have joined together to create the Midwest Climate Collaborative. The collaborative kicked off its work with a virtual summit on January 28. The players skated around Tuesday afternoon at Wukesong Sports Center without their helmets and — briefly, mercifully — without their masks, stopping and smiling for the camera that would capture the official team portrait of the 2022 U.S. Olympic women’s hockey team, not to mention their own camera phones that were tucked under pads on their hips or their shoulders. After the large group photo came the subsets: first-time Olympians in one shot, the goalies in another; University of Minnesota players followed by those from the University of Wisconsin — rivals in everyday life, teammates here.
A total of 222 athletes will be representing the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing and 20 of them have ties to the Badger State. From reigning gold medal teams in men’s curling and women’s ice hockey to breakout speedskating star Jordan Stolz, Wisconsin athletes will be aiming for the podium when the Games begin on Wednesday.
There are six players with Wisconsin connections on the 2022 U.S. women’s Olympic hockey team, which begins play in the preliminary round at 7:10 p.m. Thursday.

“Once when we realized that more than half of people with this virus transmit without any symptoms at all, that’s when it became pretty clear that this was something that could be very hard to contain,” Ajay Sethi, population health science associate professor at UW School of Medicine and Public Health, said.
UW-Madison Law School associate professor John Gross said Wisconsin’s proposed constitutional amendment sets it apart from states reducing or entirely eliminating cash bail’s use. “They’re not seeing spikes in recidivism, their costs are down and public safety is at the same level, but more people are out on the street,” he said. “And so I feel like Wisconsin is bucking the trend here.”
Malia Jones, an epidemiologist who teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and who specializes in vaccine hesitancy, said it has been clear for a while that getting children vaccinated against Covid is going to be an uphill battle. She worries that the low level of confidence in Covid vaccines for children will erode parental support for other vaccines. “This is the thing that keeps me up at night,” she said.
She worked at St. Mary’s Rectory for sixteen years, then for the State of Wisconsin for 20-years, and lastly in the food service department at the University of Wisconsin until retiring.
