The University of Wisconsin-Madison is expanding its tuition promise program to cover not only tuition for some low-income students, but nearly all other college costs that can derail progress toward a degree, such as room and board.
Hundreds of Wisconsin students from lower-income families are expected to qualify for an expanded program from the University of Wisconsin-Madison that will cover their full financial needs to attend the flagship campus, the university announced Thursday.
But the results are hardly new: an engineering professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison conducted a similar analysis in 2017, and a team of Swiss researchers published similar results in 2007.
The Bucky’s Pell Pathway program, introduced on Thursday, will meet full financial needs for four years for new first-year Wisconsin residents students who quality for Pell Grants. Transfer students can also take advantage of the program and receive funding for two years if they meet the same criteria.
The program, which Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin introduced Thursday to the Board of Regents, will meet the full financial need for those who qualify for Pell grants. Those federal dollars are limited to undergraduates with exceptional financial need but often don’t cover the full cost of school, causing many recipients to take out extra loans.

The governor’s office said his budget will include $500,000 to evaluate post-Sept. 11 veterans’ needs; an additional $1 million annually for county and tribal veterans services offices; nearly $3 million to help University of Wisconsin System campuses provide services for veterans and military personnel; and $250,000 to help provide dogs to veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
The goal of the program, called Bucky’s Pell Pathway, is to help alleviate the disadvantages students from low-income families frequently face. The assistance is only available to in-state students, and no state funds are used for either the Pell Pathway or the Tuition Promise program.
Resurgence of games serve as key cultural revitalization effort.
In her first semester, Mnookin focused on observing the university’s culture and supporting the Wisconsin Idea. To achieve this, Mnookin met with various student groups, helping her better understand the perspectives of the students she serves.
Students can donate money, food, water, clothes and more.
“No Bears,” which had its Madison premiere at 7 p.m. Thursday as part of the UW Cinematheque, is a noticeably bleaker film than its recent predecessors, with Panahi taking a darker look not only at the state of his country but his role documenting it.
“We appreciate Mayor Rhodes-Conway and alders taking this step to help UW-Madison students and the broader community,” Rob Cramer, UW-Madison vice chancellor for finance and administration, said in a statement. “It is our hope that this will increase affordable housing downtown and aligns with our efforts related to affordability and access for our students.”
The Badgers are on pace for their lowest announced attendance average since they moved to the Kohl Center in 1998. A massive dropoff in season ticket sales after a fourth losing season out of five set up the downturn.
Authorities shut down several campus arteries, including Observatory Drive and Charter Street, as a precaution.
