Tricky survival tactics of the flu virus uncovered in new study

The two main viruses that cause the flu — influenza A and B — have existed for centuries and, although some antiviral advances have been made, these bugs have proven extremely difficult to eradicate. Now, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) have identified at least one secret to the success of influenza A, a finding that might arm researchers with another way to combat it.

University of Wisconsin running back Braelon Allen hosted his second annual charity softball game inside Herr-Baker Field on Saturday afternoon. A press release by the Fond du Lac Spiders, a Northwoods League team, in February announced that proceeds would “benefit The Braelon Allen Fund, the Fond du Lac Boys & Girls Club, the Fond du Lac YMCA, and the Fond du Lac Junior Football League.”

“There’s a real irony there … that Republicans finally got what they wanted, in a way, after more than 50 years since Roe v. Wade, but it is costing them electorally,” UW-Madison political science professor Barry Burden said. “The Dobbs (v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization) decision helped keep Democrats competitive in an election cycle where they should have suffered pretty significant losses.”

Charles T. Scott

In 1963 he was appointed to the faculty in the English Department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and moved his family (then including two daughters, Lisabeth and Sheila) to Madison. At UW he established a program in English as a second language (ESL) for the instruction of international students at the university.

Ronald Ernst Doersch

He joined the faculty of the UW-Madison college of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Department of Agronomy, with responsibilities for statewide UW extension weed management education programs. Ron was particularly proud of the Pesticide Applicator Certification program that he developed for the state of Wisconsin which became “The Model” for many other states.

Structural mechanics was his principal research focus, which included the vibrations of aerospace shells, the design of nuclear fusion reactor chambers, the fabrication of microsensors and microactuators, and nanoscale mechanics analysis for the semiconductor industry.

Joachim “Joe” von Elbe

After two years of military service, Joe completed his B.S. degree from UW-Madison in 1959, and his M.S. in 1960. He received his Ph.D. in 1964, and joined the faculty of the Department of Food Science as an Assistant Professor.
