Barry Alvarez still believes in Lisa Stone.
Alvarez, the University of Wisconsin athletic director, made that clear Friday when he announced Stone would receive a one-year extension on her contract as UW women’s basketball coach. The extension, which was denied last year, gives Stone three years on her contract, carrying through the 2011-12 season.
Alvarez said he and associate athletic director Terry Gawlik, who oversees the women’s basketball program, were convinced Stone and her staff have the Badgers headed in the right direction after watching them compile a 19-15 record this season.
