The ‘compassionate’ eye of Frances Myers

Wisconsin State Journal

Frances Myers was a perfect match for printmaking: hard-working, innovative, assertive, complex. But the artist and retired UW-Madison art professor, who died unexpectedly in December 2014 of a stroke at age 78, was also known for other attributes. Kindness. A sense of spirituality. An ability to find depth in the commonplace.

Handling hate: Women in politics face a remarkable amount of sexist vitriol

Capital Times

Noted: “I think those politicians always got some degree of backlash in the form of angry letters or even hateful letters, but the bar is a lot lower with social media — you can just post it up there,” said Chris Wells, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor who studies the intersection of politics and social media. “The thing that makes it kind of complicated is politicians need to be in those social media spaces because that’s where so much of the tenor of the campaign takes place.”

Editorial: Ray Cross and UW regents should answer faculty call to rethink approach

Capital Times

Cross has been a weak advocate for the UW System and its students — too mild in his defenses of higher education and too willing to accept compromises that harm UW-Madison and other campuses. The majority of regents have been worse; they have taken positions that have undermined the integrity and the strength of the UW System. Some outstanding faculty members have left; others are thinking about doing so. And those who remain have been undercut.

Faculty arrogant? Not even in same league as GOP

Capital Times

Letter to the editor: I find it amusing and obviously not a well-thought-out comment when Rep. Jim Steineke, R-Kaukauna, calls the UW faculty arrogant for having no confidence in the Board of Regents or University of Wisconsin System President Ray Cross.

Regent John Behling works to provide positive solutions

Capital Times

Letter to the editor: [I]f there is any takeaway between John’s involvement in the emerging sand mining industry and his role on the Board of Regents, to me it would be his unique ability to navigate uncharted waters and provide positive solutions with limited unintended consequences.

UW Health announced on Monday that the satellite base in Mineral Point at the Iowa County Airport has opened, bringing the state-of-the-art emergency medical service to a much larger and growing area, as well as cutting response times for critical needs patients.

Badgers sports: New coaches’ contracts significantly higher than predecessors

Wisconsin State Journal

So much for the notion Barry Alvarez was indifferent about the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey and women’s basketball programs. The UW athletic director put any such contentions to rest by opening up the checkbook with the hirings of Tony Granato to lead the hockey program and Jonathan Tsipis to take over the women’s basketball program.

Jonathan Tsipis works to mend fences with state’s high school coaches and players

Wisconsin State Journal

Jonathan Tsipis wasn’t about to skip the opportunity to speak to the executive board for the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association at its spring meeting in April. A sure sign of a fast learner. Five years earlier, his predecessor as University of Wisconsin women’s basketball coach, Bobbie Kelsey, also stopped in at the WBCA meeting, but didn’t stick around long enough to speak to the group. That decision would haunt Kelsey throughout her time at UW.

Jonathan Tsipis followed an improbable path to top spot at UW

Wisconsin State Journal

Tsipis’ path to the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball coach’s office was marked by an improbable series of twists and turns that has taken him from coaching a team of 9-year-old boys to taking control of a program that both he and his boss, UW Athletic Director Barry Alvarez, agree is a “sleeping giant.”
