Student brewers at UW-Madison selected for another round of commercial production

A trio of student brewers from a food and beverage fermentation class were named winners Wednesday of the second-annual Campus Craft Brewery contest. The winning beer, an American wheat ale with white and red wheat, will now be commercially brewed and distributed throughout the state by Wisconsin Brewing Co. in Verona, sponsor of the contest, which is designed to prepare students for work in the food and beverage industry.

The finalists, selected by a search committee, are Linda Scott, associate dean for academic affairs at the School of Nursing at the University of Illinois-Chicago, and Linda Lewandowski, associate dean for academic affairs at the School of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Senate approves most of Walker’s college costs proposals

The Senate approved bills that would increase grants for technical college students; create grants to help two-year students deal with financial emergencies; require the state Department of Workforce Development to coordinate internships between colleges and employers; create coordinators within the UW System to help students find internships; and require colleges to keep students apprised of debt levels.

UW offers $250,000 in summer term scholarships

University of Wisconsin is offering $250,000 in summer term scholarships, which is 10 times the amount from last year. UW currently offers more than 1,000 different summer courses, but the program will expand with an addition of nearly 100 new summer courses.

Badgers men’s basketball: Greg Gard ‘so proud’ to be UW’s coach

After spending 12 weeks as an interim coach, Gard was rewarded with a five-year deal that will pay him $1.75 million in the first year and increase $50,000 each additional year. Gard began his news conference by saying it was an “extremely special moment for me” and his family. He went on to thank several people, a group that included family, friends, UW administrators, support staff and former coaches, including Bo Ryan.

“The Trouble with Tenure” was released by the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute just as members of the Board of Regents prepare to vote March 10 on a package of new tenure policies for UW campuses. The report endorses many of the provisions of draft policies developed with input from a Tenure Policy Task Force and endorsed last month by the board’s education committee.

UW officials to offer long-term contract to Gard, sources say

University of Wisconsin officials, dazzled by the remarkable turnaround engineered by interim head coach Greg Gard and his staff, are preparing to offer Gard a long-term contract to oversee the men’s basketball program. Two sources close to the program agreed UW officials have been blown away by the work of Gard, who has compiled a record of 12-5 in the Big Ten and 13-5 overall since taking over in the wake of Bo Ryan’s retirement on Dec. 15.
