Wisconsin State Journal

UW-Madison has one of the world’s largest and oldest collections of fungus, but it wasn’t until a week ago that fungi collected by one of America’s most famous scientists was accidentally rediscovered in decades-old cabinets on campus. Badgers men’s basketball: Players don’t favor Under Armour basketball

Wisconsin State Journal

University of Wisconsin junior point guard Bronson Koenig was asked about the challenges of playing on the road. Koenig’s shooting numbers are significantly higher in home games this season, so it was fair to wonder about the difficulty of playing in an unfamiliar environment and, of course, using a different ball. “I’d say it’s a little overblown,” Koenig said. “Out of the Big Ten, the Under Armour balls at Maryland is the only place I really, really didn’t like the balls.”

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents handed out annual awards Friday for university people and programs that “foster access and success in university life for historically underrepresented populations.” You can see and hear about the recipients and the work they are doing on the archived video of the last week’s meeting posted on the Board of Regents website. What you won’t see or hear on the footage are the protests of students, organized through United Council of UW Students, who came to the regents meeting to shout about how they are not being heard by university leaders on the issue of climate for students of color on system campuses.

D. Bantz: Tenure story needed more viewpoints

Capital Times

Pat Schneider’s article “Regent committee endorses controversial UW tenure policies without debate” was fairly well researched but lacked what I feel is essential to journalism today. A viewpoint. It described the viewpoints of the UW Regents and some faculty, but I feel the story and ultimately what was voted on was not accurately reported.

Meanwhile, student activists pushed for more affordable college on campuses across the country during the Million Student March in November.

UW System finances still ‘relatively strong’ as reserves drop

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

While budget cuts are occurring on campuses across the University of Wisconsin System this year, the system’s own annual report released Monday said its financial standing “remained relatively strong” as of June 30, the end of the last fiscal year. That’s just a snapshot in time, UW System officials said, and it does not account for $250 million in state budget cuts that will come into play between this fiscal year and next.

Tom Oates: As always, UW must work harder to sign blue-chip recruits

[A]t the University of Wisconsin, it is business as usual for coach Paul Chryst leading up to college football’s signing day Wednesday. The Badgers will quietly assemble their typical class, one that consists largely of 3-star recruits with a few 4-stars sprinkled in, one that ranks in the 20s or 30s nationally, one that with time and development likely will put UW in contention for a Big Ten Conference title.
