Tom Oates: UW football program in much better shape than a year ago

Wisconsin State Journal

Former coach Gary Andersen fled Madison after only two seasons, causing some UW fans to scan the national scores every Sunday morning and revel in his latest loss at Oregon State. Fans have had their share of fun, too, because Andersen has seven losses in nine games with the Beavers. But there is no reason for UW fans to act like jilted lovers. Instead of laughing derisively as Andersen’s losses pile up, they should be thanking him profusely for realizing what has become apparent in the 11 months since he left: His hiring at UW was a colossal mistake.

After listening to speeches, they marched to Library Mall chanting what has become a common refrain at rallies locally and around the country: “Black lives matter!” and “No justice, no peace!” The group reconvened for more speeches before marching up State Street to the Capitol Square.

Tom Oates: Year in, year out, Bo Ryan turns UW into a top-4 finisher in the Big Ten

Wisconsin State Journal

It’s one thing for a collegiate men’s basketball program to finish fourth or better in its conference for 14 consecutive seasons. It’s an entirely different matter when it happens at a school that has little basketball tradition and plays in a conference that is as deep and strong as any in the nation. Only in that context can we fully appreciate what Bo Ryan has done since he was named coach at the University of Wisconsin in 2001.

Vietnam veterans recall music that lifted them in book by UW-Madison instructors

Wisconsin State Journal

“We Gotta Get Out Of This Place,” written by Craig Werner (who teaches literature, music and culture in the Department of Afro-American Studies) and Doug Bradley (retired academic staff member and distinguished lecturer), suggests that popular protest songs included in depictions of the war — like Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” — weren’t the only music on the mixtapes service members played to lift their spirits in the face of isolation from loved ones and physical danger.

Claudia Pogreba: Take a stand against Koch sponsorship of UW athletics

Capital Times

For years, UW Athletics and UW-Madison have had a strong private-public partnership that has brought people together in support of Badgers on and off the playing field. But now the UW Athletic Department’s private business mentality has gone corporate, pandering to the billionaire Koch brothers and their divisive tactics. Our Walker-controlled Board of Regents is in full support.

On Campus: WARF joins Gener8tor project for UW-Madison startups

Homeless are moving closer to UW

Wisconsin State Journal

Letter to the editor: For 22 semesters I have been parking in the Lake Street parking ramp, and walking to whatever building my class happened to be held in. Only this semester, I have to walk past the homeless as they sleep on the sidewalks and alley ways near the university. I do not consider this an improvement for them over the City-County Building steps.

Rebecca Blank: Ray Cross’ 180 on tenure undercuts credibility of Board of Regents

Capital Times

UW System President Ray Cross’ about-face on a campus-specific tenure policy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison makes the Board of Regents look bad, abets faculty seeking extreme provisions and potentially delays adoption of a policy, threatening faculty recruitment, said Chancellor Rebecca Blank. Cross also undermined her ability to broker agreement on tenure issues among UW-Madison faculty, Blank said in an Oct. 22 email to Regent John Behling.

‘Is WARF a patent troll?’ and four other questions about the Apple vs. WARF lawsuit, answered
