Lihrman will leave UW with a degree in economics and a certificate in entrepreneurship — graduating on May 16 — and one of the most accomplished resumes in the history of its men’s track and field program. He’s a two-time NCAA champion and national collegiate record-holder in the indoor weight throw as well as owner of the school and Big Ten Conference standard in the outdoor hammer throw.

Madison-area law enforcement agencies grapple with body cameras

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department has already decided it’s moving ahead with the idea and now needs to determine policies … UW-Madison police decided to go forward with the devices after a couple years of considering them and trying one out. The department recently received a grant to purchase 10 more cameras and, if all goes well, it will pursue more. While the department waits for the cameras to arrive, it’s asking for input on how to use them.

ProHealth contracts with UW Health to oversee care at new Pewaukee cancer center

ProHealth Care will contract with UW Health to oversee the medical care at its new cancer center scheduled to open this year in Pewaukee. The agreement announced Thursday could lead to more services being available in Waukesha County. It also will enable ProHealth to draw on the expertise of the doctors at the Carbone Cancer Center in Madison and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

MATC president Jack Daniels says it’s time to invest in Madison’s south side

The UW-Madison based Dictionary of American Regional English is venturing into new, online friendly projects despite financial setbacks throughout the last several years. DARE is a multi-volume dictionary that defines words and phrases specific to various regions throughout the United States. It was created at UW-Madison nearly 50 years ago. Current Chief Editor of DARE Joan Houston Hall first started with the publication in 1975, when she and other employees were responsible for entering terms into the dictionary.

Tech and Biotech: WISC Partners looks to boost promising Wisconsin companies

WISC Partners plans to establish a $25 million fund and use the money to invest in eight to 12 Wisconsin companies, at about $2 million to $3 million each. With its eye out for health care, information technology and the intersection between those two, the group will zero in on companies that are past the starting gate, that already have won over some individual The other thing that’s unique about WISC Partners: It was created by UW-Madison alumni.

The American Cancer Society’s 7th annual Coaches vs. Cancer Gala on Saturday brought in more than $1 million to help in the battle against the disease. That tops the record for similar events held around the country of $956,184 that was set here last year, which broke the mark of just over $700,000 that was set the previous year.

Scott Fitzgerald: Some legislators still have ‘bitter taste’ after UW System surplus flap

In an interview broadcast Sunday on WKOW-TV program “Capitol City Sunday,” state Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, indicated that restoring funding to K-12 education and to transportation are also among the top priorities … [W]ith the UW Board of Regents voting to raise tuition on out-of-state and graduate students, Fitzgerald said there “seems to be even less of a commitment to backfill” a $300 million cut to the UW System over the next two years. The way that Fitzgerald described it, there is still some animosity left over from the Legislature’s 2013 dealings with the UW System over the latter’s fund surpluses.
