Student magazine hosts UW Fashion Week

Just page through Moda magazine, a rapidly growing student publication that showcases fashion, trends and the arts. This week Moda is going beyond its print and online editions to host “UW Fashion Week” — a series of events meant to get Madison thinking about peeling off the parkas and looking good for spring.

Hovland, Alvin “Al”

After his college education, he began his career teaching at UW-Madison in the Physical Education Department. From 1957 to 1958, he served as assistant basketball coach under Coach Harold “Bud” Foster. Al directed the required and elective physical education programs for men as coordinator from 1960 to 1980. He retired in 1985 after 37 years in the department.

UW head Ray Cross: $300M cut is ‘too much and too fast’

University of Wisconsin System president Ray Cross told the Legislature’s budget committee Tuesday that he endorses Gov. Scott Walker’s budget plan to turn the 26-campus system into an independent public authority.But Cross told the committee that the governor’s plan to cut $300 million over two years beginning in July is “too much and too fast.”

Five days after an open letter was posted online, the number of people at University of Wisconsin — now including not only faculty, but staff, students and alumi — demanding that UW System president Ray Cross oppose Gov. Scott Walker’s plan to restructure UW in his budget rose to 484. Some 88 of them were at, or graduated from UW-Madison, where faculty were scheduled Monday to vote on a resolution asking Cross to delay restructuring.

She joined the faculty at UW-Madison in 2001, retiring in 2014. She directed UW’s Chicana/o Studies Program, which became the Chican@ and Latin@ Studies Program under her leadership, and she also served as associate chair and director of Undergraduate Studies in the History Department.
