Mark Pitsch: Final Four isn’t good enough for Kentucky

While UW has been consistently viewed as a top-notch research school internationally, UK was trying to figure out how to secure more federal research than the University of Buffalo. The week I left Kentucky for my home state, the Lexington paper published a profile of Madison suggesting that if UK wanted to be more like UW, Lexington needed to be more like Madison ? artsy, progressive, intellectual.

Tony Machi didn?t have to call in sick Friday. But he would have if necessary. Machi, who grew up in Milwaukee but has lived in North Texas since he came down to attend the University of North Texas, remains a Badger at heart. And with his beloved University of Wisconsin men?s basketball team set to play here in the NCAA Final Four, Machi joined an army of Wisconsin transplants at AT&T Stadium on Friday to watch the open practice sessions.

At one time, the college basketball world would have groaned to see the grind-it-out University of Wisconsin Badgers in the Final Four. There also was a time when those same people would have been thrilled to see the thoroughbreds from Kentucky reach the final weekend of the NCAA men?s basketball tournament.

Jim Villa, hired Wednesday for the new job of vice president of university relations at the University of Wisconsin System, left no doubt about his allegiances when applying for the job. His references: current Republican Gov. Scott Walker, former Republican governor Tommy Thompson and William J. McCoshen, managing partner of a Madison lobbying firm who served Thompson as campaign manager and secretary of commerce.

The two schools, which play Saturday for a berth in the national championship game, have plenty in common. Both are flagship public universities and land-grant institutions with a research focus, although Wisconsin has a much larger student body and higher rankings in research dollars and other academic measures.

A bump in business from the Badgers

Unlike a Rose Bowl or other bowl games where Badgers fans have three weeks or more to buy a sweatshirt, T-shirt or cap, there is less than a week to gear up for the Final Four. Most area stores didn?t get Final Four apparel on their sales floor until Sunday afternoon, and even those who are not making the trek to North Texas are just plain excited and want to own a Final Four shirt sooner than later.
