High hopes for Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery

High hopes rest on UW-Madison?s shining new research building. Rising up from the center of campus, the glass-plated Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery could be the site of important medical breakthroughs ? the newest treatment for cancer or insights into genetic diseases. But officials also want it to be a place for the public to come and learn about science, a symbol of scientific discovery for the entire campus. “The building is unlike anything we?ve built before,” said John Wiley, former UW-Madison chancellor and interim director of one arm of the institutes. “In fact, I don?t think there?s anything like it anywhere.”

The University of Wisconsin maintained a sizable lead over Ohio State in the Bowl Championship Series standings released Sunday night, all but ending the Buckeyes? dreams of stealing a Rose Bowl berth from the Badgers. UW moved up to No. 5 in the rankings with a rating of .8185, and carries a substantial edge over No. 6 Ohio State (.7632).

Biddy?s real agendaIf there is any question what more authority for the UW-Madison would mean for working people (“Biddy?s Bold Agenda,” 11/12/10), the restaurants at the soon-to-open Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery provide an example. The UW has contracted with Food Fight to run these restaurants. Workers at Food Fight start around $8.50 an hour and, if they choose to have health insurance, pay almost $400 for a single plan.

Ground has been broken on an energy research facility on the UW Madison campus. Governor Jim Doyle, who provided $50 million in state funding for the new Wisconsin Energy Institute in his 2009-2011 budget, said the work to be done there can decrease dependence on fuel sources from out of state.

Meteorite fragments go on display at UW-Madison’s geology museum

From its orbit in an asteroid belt millions of miles in space to its dramatic fall to Earth last spring and now to a shelf in the UW-Madison Geology Museum, the trajectory of the Mifflin Meteorite has landed it smack in the middle of Wisconsin?s imagination. Eight pieces of the meteorite, named for the southwest Wisconsin town where it fell on April 14, are now star attractions at the museum, said Brooke Norsted, assistant director.

Tall building deserves fair shot

It?s good to see the Madison Plan Commission keeping an open mind about taller buildings Downtown. Commission members expressed interest Monday in a proposed 14-story Catholic center with student housing located on the edge of the UW-Madison campus. St. Paul?s Catholic Student Center wants to replace its much smaller and aging existing building with a $45 million worship center that could house up to 175 students and a chapel.

UW System president, chancellors call for civility after campus incidents

The president of the University of Wisconsin System and its 14 chancellors are calling for civility after reports of harassment and violence that included the death of one student.In the most recent incidents, the off-campus homes of two UW-Platteville students were vandalized Monday night, said Platteville Police Chief Doug McKinley. Racial slurs targeting blacks were written in marker, one on a door to an apartment and another on a window. A letter by UW System President Kevin Reilly and the chancellors says everyone should work to prevent the behavior that has included vandalism, bullying and assault. The system scheduled a conference on civility for Feb. 22-24 at UW-Oshkosh.

UW-Madison’s beloved ‘beer course’ prof to retire after 40 years at university

It?s last call for Timothy Allen, professor of UW-Madison?s “beer course.” Allen ? flamboyant, colorful, and beloved by students ? is retiring when this semester ends after 40 years of teaching at the university. The course that made him a legend is technically called Botany 240: Plants and Man, but it?s known as the “beer course” because one of the optional assignments is to brew beer.

Until now, I?ve contributed what has been asked for ? and more. But I?m sick after reading last week?s article that some season ticket holders, including me, will be “asked” to pay an additional 60 percent ($150 more per ticket) to keep our seats.

The University of Wisconsin football team is playing for at least a share of the Big Ten Conference title on Saturday against Northwestern at Camp Randall Stadium and the game is not yet a sellout. Big Ten football titles don?t come around these parts too often. The Badgers are attempting to secure their 12th in school history. About 1,000 tickets remained as of late Monday afternoon, despite aggressive marketing tactics, including a deal in which football tickets were packaged with tickets to the UW men?s hockey game against Michigan State that night.

St. Paul student center proposal gets warm reception in Plan Commission

Officials with the St. Paul Catholic Student Center at UW-Madison say they?ll move forward with plans for a 14-story campus worship facility and housing development after getting what they called encouraging feedback Monday from the city Plan Commission. The proposed $45 million student center would replace ? on the same site ? the Catholic campus facility at 723 State St. on State Street Mall.

The Wisconsin Policy Research Institute has released a new poll done by UW Madison political scientist Ken Goldstein with some interesting transportation findings. Slightly over half the respondents oppose the high speed rail project, and transportation in general was the area respondents were least interested in protecting from funding cuts. They also opposed toll roads by 50 to 36 percent.

On Campus: New chancellor for UW Colleges and Extension recommended

The next chancellor of UW Colleges and Extension likely will be Raymond Cross, president of Morrisville State College in New York. University of Wisconsin System President Kevin Reilly and a special committee of the UW Board of Regents recommended Cross for the job Friday. If approved by the full Board of Regents on Dec. 10, he would begin in February.
