Wellstein receives six months in jail

The first man banned from the entire UW-Madison campus was sentenced to nearly six months in Dane County Jail Monday after pleading no contest last Wednesday to three charges against him. As required by the sentencing, Albert Wellstein, a 52-year-old UW-Madison alumnus, will serve time for resisting a police officer and misdemeanor bail jumping in May 2007, and for violating a harassment restraining order banning him from the UW-Madison campus in September 2007.

Union artwork deserves respect

It is important for students to know that their fellow students play an important role in selecting the art displayed at our Wisconsin Union. Also, students have produced a vast number of the art we hold in our collections. I regret to report that there has been a recent string of vandalism in our Memorial Union and Union South that has destroyed pieces of our art collection.

I think that the policy adopted by the Board of Regents seeks to solve a legitimate problem â?? a lack of diversity on UW System campuses â?? but does so without addressing any of the underlying causes of why minority students in Wisconsin are unprepared for college.

Students orgs. to reapply for university funding

Several UW-Madison student organizations will be able to re-apply for eligibility to receive university funding the Associated Students of Madisonâ??s Student Judiciary.ruled Friday.

According to the ruling, ASMâ??s Student Services Finance Committee misinterpreted bylaw criteria when it denied funding to groups earlier this semester and must re-evaluate any group that was previously denied funding based solely on the bylaw.
