The latest project at Dane County’s zoo will showcase the state animal. In a news conference, Henry Vilas Zoo representatives said Wednesday afternoon that its new exhibit will showcase the badger, which is also the mascot critter for the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

UW professor to enhance classroom dynamic, change way students choose Gen Ed requirements

While University of Wisconsin students are beginning to register for courses for the fall semester, one UW professor is looking to reform the registration system so students can easily find classes they are more likely to enjoy. Harry Brighouse, a UW philosophy professor who specialized in educational policy studies, said he believes a better way students can choose their general education requirement classes is through implementing a course recommendation and reviewing system.

‘Black Woman Heal Day’ empowers women around the world

April 1 is Black Woman Heal Day, an international movement started here in Madison last year to increase awareness, healing and prevention of sexual abuse of black women around the world. Noted: University of Wisconsin-Madison finance professor Jim Johannes, who testified in favor of the bill, said it standardizes courts’ interpretation of what is required in order to sue.

“It puts a fork in what you need as evidence when you approach the courts in the pleading stage of a case,” he said. “It provides clarity for the courts. Previously, before this the courts could interpret it any way they wanted to.”

Native Americans reflect on traditions, challenges at powwow

Noted: The event was organized in part by Wunk Sheek, a Native American student group on the UW-Madison campus. In March, the group made news after an incident of intolerance on campus, when students mocked a Ho-Chunk Elder, shouting stereotypical war cries during a Native American ceremony.

Diana Peterson, a UW-Madison grad student and Menominee Nation member, said incidents like this show the challenges Native Americans and other minority groups face from discrimination.

“It’s not just with the native peoples, but it’s representatives with other cultures as well,” Peterson said. “It’s frustrating sometimes to see these things on campus.”

Peterson said she hopes to work with UW staff to include more representation from all cultures.

Sanders attacks Gov. Walker in Madison speech

Hutchins named Big Ten Swimmer of the Year

Following a standout season that culminated in a pair of top-10 finishes at the NCAA championships, Wisconsin junior Matt Hutchins was selected as 2016 Big Ten Men’s Swimmer of the Year, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Hutchins is the first male Big Ten Swimmer of the Year in Wisconsin program history. He is the first Badger to win the award on either the men’s or women’s side since Maggie Meyer in 2011.

Students react to college affordability proposal

On Tuesday, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin met with a group of UW-Madison students to discuss the student loan debt crisis and reform legislation introduced earlier this month. The bill will allow student loan borrowers to refinance outstanding debt at lower rates and increase grants to keep up with the rising cost of tuition. Students shared their stories about being in debt from student loans and the impact the plans can have.

UW student rescued from residence hall elevator

A University of Wisconsin student was rescued Tuesday from a malfunctioning elevator in a campus residence hall. Firefighters were called to Witte Hall at 9:05 p.m. on a report of a student trapped in an elevator. Her car was found between the fourth and fifth floors.
