UW financial officer takes Texas job

University of Wisconsin-Madison’s vice chancellor for finance is leaving to take a job at the University of Texas.

Both schools posted news releases Tuesday saying Darrell Bazzell will leave Wisconsin in March and begin a stint as senior vice president and chief financial officer at the University of Texas at Austin on April 18.

Happ earns second-straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor

For the second-straight week, Ethan Happ of the Wisconsin men’s basketball team has earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors from the league office, as announced on Monday.

After scoring the game-winning basket two weeks ago against No. 4 Michigan State and being named Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the freshman forward from Milan, Illinois, followed up with a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds to power UW to a 66-60 road win at Penn State last Thursday.

Feingold discusses the issue of student debt at UW-Madison

The Wisconsin Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, Russ Feingold, spent Monday evening discussing college costs with the UW-Madison Chapter of College Democrats.

This is all part of a two-day tour of college campuses throughout the state of Wisconsin by the Feingold campaign. The candidate is addressing students at each stop on the burden of high cost of student debt.

Bill would provide amnesty for sexual assault victims

Noted: The bill is supported by Attorney General Brad Schimel and University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank, who said avoiding citations for victims and their supporters is already policy on campus.

“We have been telling them if you are drinking but helping a friend we will focus on the sexual assault issue and not the drinking issue,” Blank said. “But I think being able to say under the law of Wisconsin this is not just our practice but this is the law does have a certain depth of convincingness to it.”

Students Compete to Change the Future of Transportation

Students part of University of Wisconsin’s BadgerLoop are preparing for a national SpaceX competition that challenges them to bring transportation technology to life.

The BadgerLoop team is creating their version of SpaceX’s Hyperloop concept, a new technology that uses air pressures to propel a transportation pod down a tube for fast travel.

Nearly 400 people attended the panel, many of them non Muslims.

“This is actually a good thing.. when you see a lot of non Muslims coming here,” Talaat said.

UW leader to address diversity shortcomings

University of Wisconsin System President Ray Cross plans to issue a statement addressing the system’s diversity shortcomings.

Students, alumni and faculty from UW-Parkside, UW-Madison and UW-Fond du Lac met with Cross on Thursday. They asked Cross to acknowledge a lack of progress on diversity, create diversity training and re-commit to Plan 2008, which laid out diversity goals calling for enrolling more students of color and boosting their graduation rates.

UW retail expert says proposed sales tax holiday would be boon for consumers

UW Extension restructuring due to budget cuts could eliminate jobs

Jobs could be on the chopping block as the UW Extension undergoes major restructuring this year.

The 2015 state budget included $3.6 million in cuts for the Extension this year, according to a press release. Restructuring will include merging some county locations into regional outlets, as well as reducing the number of specialist and support positions.

Gov. Walker shares message of inclusiveness in 2016 State of the State

Noted: “We are also excited to work with the University of Wisconsin System to explore providing a three-year degree that would start in our high schools and continue on many of our UW campuses. This would help reduce costs and move people into the workforce sooner,” said Gov. Walker.

Along with that plan, the Governor called for expanding the UW Flex Degree option to a number of students that would be equal to a new UW campus.

All of that follows last week’s unveiling of a college affordability package, which he urged legislators to pass with bipartisan support.

$3.3 million in grants aimed at achievement gap

Noted: University of Wisconsin’s Hope Lab says the program has proved its success over the years. In a new evaluation to be released next month, the study found 73 percent of AVID/TOPS students go to college compared to 62 percent who go to college who are not in the program. Those statistics are credited to expanding opportunities and increasing attendance.

“It’s reducing the number of absences that they have and as any parent knows, showing up for class is a hard task and getting them there is so important because that’s where the learning happens,” said Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab, of Wisconsin HOPE Lab.

Crim says Madison can be a transient place. People come here for school, graduate and decide to stay and enter the workforce. But for some African Americans, they become the one Black professional there. “So we thought it made sense to try to build a network across the city so professionals feel supported and connected as well as informed on what’s happening in the community.”

Report: Former Badgers coach to star in web-based reality show

Former Badgers football coach Bret Bielema will reportedly star in a web-based reality series, according to a sports website.

In an article Thursday, The Bleacher Report said that Bielema, who is now the head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks, will star in “Being Bret Bielema.” Trailers teasing the program were posted to YouTube, one on Dec. 29 and another Wednesday.

UW researchers find possible treatment for Alzheimer’s

University of Wisconsin researchers say they’ve found a treatment to clean up the plaques that form in the brain of mice with Alzheimer’s disease.

The research published in the journal Brain shows that compounds that inhibit two cellular proteins can help clean up the plaques found in the brain of mice with Alzheimer’s disease. The proteins work inside the cell to remove toxic material.

Four Badgers Post Near Clean Sweep of Weekly Big Ten Awards

Following standout performances during Wisconsin’s dual meet at USC on Tuesday, four Badgers were recognized with weekly Big Ten Conference honors. International competition judges quality of ham, sausages

T.J. Edwards named Freshman All-American

T.J. Edwards’ debut season with the Wisconsin football team was an unqualified success.

At least that’s the way the Football Writers Association of America saw it.

Edwards was recognized Monday for his efforts as a key contributor to a Wisconsin unit that ranked No. 2 in scoring defense and No. 3 in total defense in the FBS this season, earning a place on the FWAA Freshman All-America Team. A starter in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman, Edwards led the Badgers in tackles with 84. He also logged 6.5 tackles for loss, broke up four passes and forced a fumble.

Lake-effect snow forms over Lake Mendota

A brief period of lake-effect snow was spotted Monday morning by the UW’s Atmospheric Oceanic Space Sciences rooftop camera.

The lake-effect snow event was reported over Lake Mendota, which is quite unusual, according to News 3 meteorologist Karin Swanson.

Wisconsin researchers land $5 million grant for study of state epilepsy patients

Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin and University of Wisconsin-Madison have won a four-year, $5 million federal grant to study the brain networks of epilepsy patients. Their study, called the Epilepsy Connectome Project, will involve state-of-the-art brain imaging of about 200 adult temporal lobe epilepsy patients from across the state.

Badgers legend Krumrie elected to College Football Hall of Fame

Tim Krumrie’s long wait is finally over. Some 24 years after becoming eligible for the game’s highest honor, the man who set the standard for defensive players at the University of Wisconsin is set to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Krumrie’s election became official Friday with the National Football Foundation’s announcement of the 16 members — 14 players and two coaches — that comprise the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2016.

Gov. Walker wants some state records made public, but not others

Noted: But the Governor is still fighting the release of other records that shed light on the process his administration went through when it altered the Wisconsin Idea – a part of the UW System’s mission statement – as it put together the 2015-16 state budget early last year.

In the initial release of his budget plan, Gov. Walker changed the UW System’s mission to “meet the state’s workforce needs.” He also proposed striking language about public service and improving the human condition, and deleting the phrase: “Basic to every purpose of the system is the search for truth.”

Gov. Walker scrapped the changes after a strong public reaction against them, blaming it on a “drafting error.”

New nutritional guidelines strike familiar tone, emphasize cutting back sugar

Noted: “I think it’s a little more strict than it used to be, but it’s the same message, the same key messages that you want to take home,” said Julie Andrews, UW Health chef and registered dietitian. “The FDA suggests reducing the intake of added sugars, and so that means any sugars added during the processing of the food.”

Andrews is the coordinator for UW Health’s Learning Kitchen program, which offers cooking classes to those looking to learn how to cook healthier meals. Classes are held at UW Health at The American Center building on Madison’s northeast side.
