ASM, UW-Madison administration review campus climate survey results

The Associated Students of Madison Student Council met with UW-Madison administration during its meeting Wednesday to examine results of the recently published campus climate survey.

Dean of Students Lori Berquam and University Health Services Executive Director Sarah Van Orman informed the council of the survey’s key results and gave recommendations for using those findings to address sexual assault and sexual misconduct on campus.

The survey, conducted by the Association of American Universities last spring, aimed to assess the prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses nationwide, as well as ask for students’ perceptions of campus climate and knowledge of campus resources for these issues.

Wisconsin men’s hockey television schedule announced

The start of the 2015-16 Wisconsin men’s hockey season is less than three weeks away, and now the television schedule and start times are set.

The Badgers’ television schedule includes 10 regular-season games that will air on either BTN, ESPNU, ESPNEWS or American Sports Network (ASN), with four more slated for CN900, which is available in Michigan. In addition, the Big Ten tournament, which takes place March 17-19 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, will also air on BTN.

UW’s first television appearance is slated for Nov. 20 against Denver at the Kohl Center on ASN. That contest will begin at 7:30 p.m. CT.

Senate committee to hold hearing on fetal research ban

Wisconsin legislators are set to hold another public hearing on a bill that would outlaw research on tissue taken from aborted fetuses.

The Senate’s health committee was scheduled to hold a hearing on the Republican-authored measure Tuesday morning in the state Capitol. The Assembly’s criminal justice already has held a hearing and approved the bill, clearing the way for a full vote that chamber but it’s unclear how much support the proposal has among Senate Republicans, who are concerned the measure’s effect on research.

Fetal research ban authors try to persuade Senate committee

The authors of a bill that would outlaw research on tissue from fetuses aborted are trying to persuade the state Senate’s health committee to approve the proposal.

Sen. Duey Stroebel and Rep. Andre Jacque, both Republicans, told the committee during a public hearing Tuesday that the bill will stop atrocities and aborted children should be treated like humans, not specimens.

Sexual encounter leads to charges against UW student

A UW-Madison student faces a felony false imprisonment charge, and misdemeanor charges in connection with a sexual encounter with another student Sept. 13.

UWPD receives report of sexual assault at frat house

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department received a report of a sexual assault at a fraternity house off campus Saturday.

Officials said the sexual assault reportedly happened early Saturday morning, and bystanders intervened to stop the situation.

The sexual assault was reported to a Campus Security Authority, and not to law enforcement, which means there is no active criminal investigation, police said.

Campaign for UW sexual assault victims

UW-Madison police are looking to help victims of sexual assault feel more comfortable about coming forward to report it. It’s part of a campaign called “Tell Us,” and for the second year, police are using various forms of media to let the campus community know they’re here to help.

A video on YouTube shows members of the UW-Madison police force. They are all saying things like “Tell us” and “We are here to help. The video is meant for victims of sexual assault.

Quoted: Don Stanley, a marketing professor at the University of Wisconsin’s life sciences communication department, says the fad is a testament to the fast-paced times.

“[It] allows people to make a mistake, and then the next week, everybody’s right back in it, at the same starting line,” Stanley said. “That obviously has been very appealing to people.”

Millions of people have logged on and signed up so far this season – at least one site expects to dole out $2 billion over the fall, according to Stanley.

“That’s astounding when you think about it,” he says. “It’s unbelievable the scale of revenue that’s involved in these one-week leagues.”

Survey: More than 1 in 4 UW women sexually assaulted

More than one in every four undergraduate women (27.6 percent) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison report being a victim of sexual assault, according to a new survey released Monday morning by the Association of American Universities (AAU). That’s a higher rate than the 23.1 percent of female undergraduates who reported being victims in the survey conducted by 27 universities nationwide.

The data comes from a questionnaire that was sent by email to UW students in April and May. Roughly 22 percent of the undergraduate population answered the questions in the survey. It also found that of those students who were sexually assaulted, only 26.1 percent reported the incident to authorities.

Police arrest 18-year-old in connection with UW dorm sex assault

An 18-year-old was arrested Friday in connection with a sexual assault on campus last weekend. The University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department said Charles W. Wolf was taken into custody on suspicion of fourth-degree sexual assault and false imprisonment. Police said a woman reported she was sexually assaulted during the early morning hours Saturday at a UW-Madison residence hall. Police said the woman and the attacker were acquaintances.

Noted: Dr. Sarah Nehls, a cornea specialist and ophthalmologist at UW Heath, performed the delicate procedure to remove the hook. “In this case, you can’t just pull the fish hook back out backward, because that would create more destruction of tissue,” Nehls said.

“Eye protection is a key issue,” Nehls said. “So wear sun glasses when you’re fishing. They would provide protection to the surface of the eye.”

Fire dept. investigates report of smoke at UW building

Crews were investigating a report of smoke in a campus building Saturday, an official said. Dane County dispatch said Madison firefighters responded to a report of smoke at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Computer Sciences building at 1210 W. Dayton St. at 11:42 a.m.

Division fire chief Ron Schwenn told News 3 there was a fire in the ventilation duct two floors below ground. He said the fire was in an air-handling unit for a computer system; the motor caught fire.

About a block away from Camp Randall on a Badger game day, Schwenn admits, is a particularly bad place for a fire to start.

Study: Children in school provide warning system for flu in community

Noted: “If I’m seeing a patient in the clinic and I know that influenza is hitting in the schools around, I’m much more likely to be thinking of it and treating the patient appropriately,” said Dr. Jon Temte, a professor of family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Temte directed the $1.5 million study funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study is looking at students in the Oregon School District and working to accurately diagnose influenza cases among students.

2 sexual assaults reported on UW campus

Two separate sexual assaults were reported last weekend on the University of Wisconsin campus.

UW police said both assaults were in residence halls during the early morning hours of Sept. 12 and were reported to police on Sunday and Monday.

Police said that in both cases, the people involved knew one another.

The data on median salaries of university alumni comes from information the Obama administration gathered to demonstrate earnings of alumni after graduating from universities. It measures the salaries of alumni who are 10 years into their career.

Grant to UW, city offers new opportunities for research

UW-Madison and the City of Madison will join more than 20 other city-university partnerships as beneficiaries of a $1 million grant to launch a program coordinating efforts of research and funding between academic institutions and their communities.

The White House announced the MetroLab Network, funded by a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, in a statement Monday along with other “Smart Cities” initiatives.

Madison West junior Terrell Carey is drawing interest from programs around the country including Purdue and Wyoming, but it was a recent visit to Wisconsin that had him smiling.

UW School of Education grapples with teacher decline

University of Wisconsin’s School of Education is stepping in to reverse ballooning student-teacher ratio and a steep decline of educators in the state.

According to a Wisconsin Budget Project report, nearly 3,000 public school teachers left their jobs within the past nine years in the state. Meanwhile, student recruitment continues to rise, resulting in a student-to-teacher ratio that is growing faster than the national average, said Tamarine Cornelius, an analyst at the Wisconsin Budget Project.

Nigel Hayes named pre-season All-American

Wisconsin Badgers junior forward Nigel Hayes has been named a pre-season first team All-American by The Sporting News. Hayes started all 40 games on the Badgers’ 2015 Big Ten champion and Final Four team, ranking third on the squad in scoring (12.4 ppg) and second in rebounds (6.2 rpg).

UWPD K9 Unit boosts police efficiency, ensures campus safety

While thousands of people filled Camp Randall for kickoff Saturday morning, police dog Odin and his handler Sgt. Brent Plisch’s work began hours earlier, running security sweeps on the venue to ensure spectators’ safety.

Odin, a Czech-born German Shepherd trained in obedience, human trafficking and explosive detection, has been with UW-Madison Police Department since 2010. He is part of the three-dog K9 Unit that performs approximately 175 deployments every year on campus, from securing venues before events and responding to bomb threats to performing dignitary protection for high-profile guests such as the president and Dalai Lama.

“Most people want to try to send their kids to college and lots of people need student loans to do it, or at least under the current system they do,” Wagner said. “So this is a way for Republicans and Democrats to work together for something that benefits people who vote for both sides.”

Police say 40-year-old Steven J. Johanowicz of Madison was arrested on a tentative charge of Invasion or Privacy.

They say his arrest is part of an ongoing investigation that’s being conducted by the Madison Police Department and UW-Madison Police Department.

UW Police make battery arrest after man’s odd behavior

UW Police shot a man with a stun gun, after some bizarre behavior in the campus area.

Officials say it all started around 2:20 p.m. Thursday, when Madison Police was called about a man throwing punches near State Street and North Park Street. The man allegedly tried to hit the person twice who was calling 911. Both Madison, and UW Police sent officers to the area.

Police use Taser on man who reportedly attacked 2 on UW campus

A man who reportedly attacked two people on the University of Wisconsin campus Thursday was arrested after being hit with a Taser for not cooperating with police, according to a release. Police responded to the Education Sciences Building at 1025 W. Johnson St. around 2:45 p.m. for a report of a battery, according to the release.

UW police chief stresses awareness of campus sexual assault

UW-Madison Police Department Chief Susan Riesling addressed issues of campus sexual assault at the semester’s first Associated Students of Madison Student Council meeting Wednesday.

Riesling reiterated the prevalence of assault both on campus and nationwide, noting UW-Madison had 164 sexual assaults reported to campus police last year. She pointed out this number is higher than most universities, but speculated it could be a result of the university’s concerted effort to encourage reporting.

UPDATE: Wisconsin Assembly committee passes fetal tissue ban

A Wisconsin state Assembly committee has passed a Republican-backed bill opposed by the University of Wisconsin that would prohibit research using tissue obtained from aborted fetuses.

Wednesday’s vote makes the bill available for a vote by the full Assembly as soon as later this month. It’s unclear whether the measure has enough support to pass the Senate, where Republican Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has not commented on its chances.

“We have a new species of Homo, with all of its interesting characteristics,” John Hawks, a University of Wisconsin-Madison paleoanthropologist said.

UW Police investigating financial fraud on campus

UW-Madison Police are investigating “dozens” of reports from faculty members saying they’ve seen fraudulent charges come in on their debit or credit cards.

UWPD spokesperson Marc Lovicott said it’s believed all of the victims used their cards at the businesses in a building at 333 E. Campus Mall.
