UW-Madison lands $1 million from Clif Bar, Organic Valley for organic crop research

University of Wisconsin-Madison has been named recipient of the nation’s first endowed chair focused on plant breeding for organic crops, with $1 million in funding from Clif Bar, a maker of sports nutrition products, and Organic Valley, a farmer cooperative in La Farge. Clif Bar, based in California, says it’s working with various organizations to raise $10 million for organic plant breeding research.

Badgers football: Paul Chryst expects freshman RB Jordan Stevenson to join team by fall camp

Highly touted University of Wisconsin running back Jordan Stevenson did not arrive to Madison with the rest of his recruiting class, but Badgers head coach Paul Chryst still expects to get the freshman on campus before the season begins. All freshmen, except Stevenson, enrolled in summer classes earlier this month and began summer conditioning workouts.

Bo Ryan helps promote Rock & Read Fundraiser in Middleton

Bo Ryan is a man in high demand since leading his Badgers on back to back trips to the Final Four. Ryan loosely estimated he’s signed 10,000 autographs for charities since Wisconsin’s latest trip to the Final Four in April. Sunday Ryan made a stop at the Capital Brewery in Middleton to help promote the 2nd annual Rock & Read Fundraiser to benefit summer reading clubs in the Madison area.

Privately-run prisons hold inmates longer, study finds

Privately-run prisons in the U.S. have become an increasingly popular way for states to cut costs, but a recent study finds that inmates actually stay longer in private prisons than in state-run correctional facilities.

A study by Wisconsin School of Business assistant professor Anita Mukherjee found that inmates held in private prisons in Mississippi from 1996 to 2004 served 4% to 7% longer than inmates serving similar sentences in public prisons. Mukherjee’s study, which is currently under review, appears to be the first to compare time served between public and private prisons.

UW-Madison is the fourth-largest research institution in the United States, according to a recent study released by NorthStar Consulting. The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences – CALS – alone has about $102 million in research funding. It’s difficult to quantify direct and indirect economic benefits because of the many complex connections and partnerships across the university and UW-Extension. But certainly several current research projects are contributing value to agriculture in the state and beyond.

Playing host to so many political protests in recent years, the Capitol rotunda saw another June 11, as a coalition of activist groups known as Another Budget is Possible rallied against Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed biennial budget. More than 10 speakers challenged the budget cuts, including Sergio González, a doctoral candidate in the UW-Madison history department and a member of the Teachers Assistant Association.

“I don’t think there’s any evidence of any kind of personal use in that way which is implied by the strong label of slush fund,” said Professor David Canon.

Instead, Canon says the focus should be on the bigger issue of efficiency within the PAC.

Badger football players volunteer at Goodman Community Center

Badger football players got their workouts in a different way on Wednesday, helping improve play spaces for children. Coach Paul Chryst led team members in putting up a large tarp over a playground at the Goodman Community Center on Madison’s east side. Players also spread mulch on the center’s grounds and organized the center’s food pantry.

Badgers football team sets two more kickoff times

The Badgers football team set kickoff times for two more non-conference games. Wisconsin will meet Miami (Ohio) at 11 a.m. on Sept. 12. That game will be broadcast on either ESPN2 or ESPNU. The Badgers will host Troy on Sept. 19 at 2:30 p.m. That game will air on BTN.

Kaminsky, Martin named UW’s Athletes of the Year

UW study links poor sleep to potential for Alzheimer’s

A study by University of Wisconsin researchers suggests that poor sleep in middle age could be one of the first symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Senior author Dr. Ruth Benca said in a release that despite correlation, the study doesn’t show whether poor sleep causes amyloid plaques to develop in the brain or whether amyloid plagues prevent quality sleep.

B1G Recognizes UW’s Rumpel, Van Hout for Sportsmanship Award Winners

The Big Ten announced on Wednesday the 28 honorees named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2014-15 academic year. These standouts were chosen from a group of more than 350 students honored throughout the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship. Joel Rumpel, Hockey, and Aja Van Hout, Swimming, represented the Badgers.

Capitols Johnson announces commitment to UW

Just hours after Capitols head coach and general manager Luke Strand announced his decision to accept the position of associate head coach with the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey program, one of his stars from the Capitols followed suit. Winger Will Johnson announced his commitment to the Badgers on Wednesday afternoon, where he will begin play in the 2015-16 season.

UW professor weighs in on another complication in Takata airbag recall
