Champions Tour coming to University Ridge next June

The PGA Champions Tour will come to University Ridge Golf Course starting next June. The announcement was made at the golf course Monday morning. Steve Stricker will host the American Family Insurance Classic. Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly turn 50 in time to play in the tournament in 2017.

Quoted: Dr. Keith Poulsen, clinical assistant professor of veterinary medicine, said, “As the weather is getting dryer and warmer, influenza is relatively weak compared to other viruses. We’re predicting that new infections are going to go down.” He continued, “As the weather cools down in the fall and the migratory birds start going back south, we’re expecting to see more cases.” He stresses that all of this is fluid and hard to be determined at this point.

Badgers fare well in Academic Progress Rates

Construction to hamper parking, traffic near Union Theater

Two monthslong construction projects will hamper traffic and parking near the Wisconsin Union Theater beginning this week, officials said. Wisconsin Union Theater spokeswoman Esty Dinur said the construction of an underground loading dock at Memorial Union and a city of Madison Langdon Street utility project will close UW-Madison’s Parking Lot 1 beginning Tuesday. Parking Lot 1 is off Langdon Street and adjacent to Memorial Union.

That increase has vaulted the UW System from 46th to 3rd on the list of state employers with the most workers enrolled in BadgerCare Plus. Only Walmart and McDonald’s have more employees receiving those government benefits in Wisconsin.

Job prospects good for college grads

Employers have increased hiring of new grads by 9.6 percent this year, according to the National Association for Colleges and Employers. “We’ve been seeing an increase in employers for the past couple of years,” says Steve Schroeder, assistant dean for UW’s BBA program. “We’re not quite where we were pre-2008, but we’re close.”

UW law students answer questions about deadly force

Members of UW-Madison’s Black and Latino Law Student Associations are hoping a video they created will help as the community awaits a charging decision in the death of Tony Robinson. Qortney McLeod, co-president of the Black Law Student Association explains, “When you look around the country, and a lot of the things that are happening in, whether it be Ferguson or Baltimore or anywhere else, I think a part of the reason why people are so upset is because there’s not really an understanding of the process and the law behind what’s going in to making these decisions.”

Video by UW Law School students focuses on officer-involved deaths

“We saw around the country that there was a lot of confusion, frustration, sometimes anger when decisions like this come and I think a large part of it was the fact the public wasn’t aware of the law, how it was applied and how the investigations were conducted,” said Stan Davis, an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin Law School. Davis worked with six Latino or black law school students to create a 14-minute video explaining the law in a way the general public can understand.

UW law students hope video will answer community’s questions regarding police deadly use of force

A group of UW law students released a video Monday called, “Understanding Police use of Deadly Force.” They’re hoping this 14-minute educational video will help community members better understand the laws that surround deadly use of force and the legal review process that comes after an officer-involved shooting.

The video was put out by the University of Wisconsin Black Law Students Association and the Latino Law Students Association in response to the officer-involved shooting of 19-year-old Tony Robinson.

Rethinking sales incentive management

Sales is often associated with competition, which, in a sense, negates the idea of cooperation. But recent research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business suggests that incentives offered to teams might be more effective than those offered to individuals, when members of those groups have established a social connection.

Noah Lim and Hua Chen, both marketing professors at the school, were unsatisfied with existing research on incentives. Much of it suggested that groups enable freeloaders to thrive.

In a note from the editor published Thursday, Aliya Iftikhar said the change will “foster creativity among the staff by continuing to move away from the stagnant structure of daily print newspapers.”

In the meantime, no one thinks the lawmakers can undo the $300 million cut the governor wants to give the University of Wisconsin schools. They have decided the added flexibility Walker proposed as a means of having the schools find ways to cut costs should be dumped. So the UW will get all the negatives of the Walker budget and none of the proposed positives.
