As the Wisconsin Badgers football team prepares for another visit to Pasadena, University of Wisconsin-Madison students are taking a little more caution in planning what can be an expensive trip to California and buying their tickets to the Rose Bowl.Tickets to last year?s Rose Bowl sold out within 15 minutes of becoming available to student season ticket holders. The year before it had taken 20 minutes until the only place a student could find a ticket was from someone who had bought it at the original face value.

Two additional universities cut ties with adidas

The University of Washington and Rutgers University announced plans Tuesday to cut ties with adidas following allegations of labor violations from a factory contracted by the apparel company, a move some members of the University of Wisconsin-Madison have encouraged Interim Chancellor David Ward to pursue. The issue began January 2011 when a factory contracted by adidas suddenly shut down without compensating over 2,700 workers. Since then, other colleges and universities, including Cornell and Oberlin, have cut ties with the company for violating contracts with the schools to ensure all workers are paid.

Pete Waite is no longer the University of Wisconsin volleyball coach, a move dictated by athletic department officials, multiple sources confirmed Monday. UW announced Waite had resigned after 14 seasons, a stint that included nine NCAA tournament appearances, Big Ten Conference championships in 2000 and ?01 and a runner-up finish in the national tournament in 2000. A three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, Waite said in the news release he was stepping down “to allow someone else the opportunity to take this program back to the top of the Big Ten.”

University of Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez said the latest expansion of the Big Ten Conference is more about preparing for the future than fortifying the present. It was announced Monday that Maryland will be leaving the Atlantic Coast Conference and joining the Big Ten beginning in 2014-15. It?s expected Rutgers will follow suit as early as Tuesday, bolting the Big East Conference to give the Big Ten 14 members spreading across 11 states.

Big Ten expansion could help Badgers’ recruiting

During his 16 seasons as Wisconsin?s head football coach, Barry Alvarez made recruiting the East Coast a priority.

UW landed many outstanding players from that region, including tailbacks Ron Dayne and Anthony Davis from talent-rich New Jersey and P.J. Hill from New York.

After straying from that area early on at UW, Bret Bielema has reasserted the Badgers? recruiting efforts in that region of the country.

A Maryland sports website is reporting that the University of Maryland Board of Regents is going to recommend the university apply for admittance to the Big Ten Conference. InsideMDsports.com reported that “a source with knowledge of the situation” has confirmed the board?s decision to leave the Atlantic Coast Conference to become the 13th member school of the Big Ten.

’62 team better than ever

Fifty years ago this fall, at the Northwestern game, members of the legendary 1912 Wisconsin Badgers football team were introduced. Then a player on the ?62 team, as I watched those old-timers file onto the field, I couldn?t believe such scrawny old guys had ever played Big Ten football. This fall the famous ?62 team will be remembered. Now, yet another 50 years later, with linemen another l00 pounds heavier, we are the scrawny old guys.

UW will host state tournaments through spring 2020

MADISON, Wis.-The University of Wisconsin has reached a deal with the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association to host state high school athletic competition for seven years. The WIAA will host state competition for high school boys basketball, football, golf, wrestling, and softball at UW facilities in Madison through the spring of 2020. State swimming, diving, and tennis tournaments will continue to be held on the UW campus but are not part of the new agreement.

Senior day salute set for Saturday

Just a quick note to remind Wisconsin football fans that a total of 13 members of the program are to be honored during senior day Saturday before UW hosts Ohio State.

The active players are: tailback Montee Ball, safety Shelton Johnson, offensive lineman Robert Burge, cornerbacks Marcus Cromartie and Devin Smith, linebacker Mike Taylor, offensive tackle Rick Wagner, defensive end Brendan Kelly and quarterback Phillips.

Ward says university is not taking action on Palermo?s

Interim Chancellor David Ward released a statement Wednesday stating the University of Wisconsin-Madison will review its contracts with Palermo?s Pizza following a request by a university committee to cut ties with the pizza company….In the statement, Ward said he will review the committee?s request to cut ties, but the university currently has no plans to take action. Ward said while certain parties within the university, including the athletic department and the Wisconsin Union, have sponsorship agreements with Palermo?s, UW-Madison as an institution is not ?a party to this dispute.?

Badgers athletics: Enhanced hiring policy, tougher background checks pay off

Because you can never be too careful these days, especially when it comes to children and sports, University of Wisconsin Athletic Department officials took important action earlier this year. They adopted a policy, which went into effect April 1, whereby background checks are done on all persons involved with the various sports camps that are held annually on campus. According to Holly Weber, the human resources director for UW Athletics, more than 700 camp-related background checks have been run through her office since April.

UW athletic director Barry Alvarez said recently the background checks had altered the course of more than one hire this year. He declined to get into specifics, but the impact is clear. “They’re very important,” he said of the reviews.

Despite everything he has endured in a topsy-turvy senior season at the University of Wisconsin, Ball is just one touchdown shy of the NCAA career record going into the game against Ohio State on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium. Ex-Penn State president charged in Sandusky case

(CNN) – Former Penn State President Graham Spanier has been charged with several counts in the Jerry Sandusky child rape scandal at the university, including obstruction of justice, perjury, conspiracy, endangering the welfare of children and failure to report allegations of child abuse. Additional charges also were filed Thursday against two other former university officials -? former Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley and ex-Vice President Gary Schultz. The three men now face the same five charges.

UW to unveil Bob Johnson rink Friday

MADISON (WKOW) — Friday night will be a special one at the Kohl Center. The Badger men?s hockey team hosts Colorado College in its home opener, and the team will unveil the new Bob Johnson rink. The ice sheet at the Kohl Center is being named for the legendary coach, ?Badger Bob? Johnson. He led the Badgers to seven NCAA tournaments and won three championships. It?s been more than 20 years since Badger Bob lost his battle with brain cancer in 1991.

Badgers women’s hockey: Alex Rigsby nets first shutout at La Bahn Arena

The University of Wisconsin women?s hockey team is still recording many firsts at the new LaBahn Arena. Scratch a shutout off the list. Senior forward Brianna Decker and freshman defenseman Courtney Burke each enjoyed three-point games, and junior goaltender Alex Rigsby made 21 saves as the Badgers rolled to a 5-0 win over New Hampshire before 1,367 spectators on Sunday.
