In addition to being students and athletes at the University of Wisconsin, members of the 23 sports programs are ambassadors to the community. That?s reflected in the fact that they combined for more than 3,600 hours of civic-related service during the 2011-12 school year. Whether it?s appearing at local schools, providing autographed items for fund-raisers, heading up food drives, visiting the UW Children?s Hospital or giving time to organizations like Habitat for Humanity, UW student-athletes do more than you probably realized.

Campus Connection: Madison voted America?s best college football town

Madison earned the top spot in a USA Today reader survey that asked participants to vote for the country?s best college football town. USA Today reports that the survey generated more than 50,000 votes. Blacksburg, Va., — the home of Virginia Tech ? placed second among a list of 15 finalists nominated by five sportswriters and broadcasters. Columbus, Ohio — home of the Big Ten?s Ohio State Buckeyes — placed third.

MADISON, Wis.-Madison has been named America?s best college football town in a USA Today reader survey. The home of the University of Wisconsin Badgers topped 15 finalists in a survey and received 50,000 votes.

Trio of alleged Montee Ball attackers charged with substantial battery

Three UW-Madison students were charged Monday with substantial battery for allegedly attacking Wisconsin Badgers running back Montee Ball last month as he walked Downtown with friends. But a witness to the attack told investigators that a suspect said Ball ?jumped? him the week before, according to a criminal complaint filed in Dane County Circuit Court.

A: The alternate uniforms won?t cost the university or taxpayers anything, according to Justin Doherty, an associate athletic director and spokesman for the Athletic Department. Cornell University drops adidas for violating workers’ rights

Cornell University announced last Thursday it will cut business ties with adidas, a company the University of Wisconsin-Madison has recently had to consider its own relationship with. In a letter to the company Thursday, Cornell University President David Skorton said the university will stop doing business with adidas effective Oct. 1. Skorton called the apparel industry?s approach to workers? rights ?a critical issue that demands immediate attention.?

Madison police shut down 24 illegal house parties Saturday and heavily monitored popular student tailgating areas such as Breese Terrace and Regent, Langdon and Spring Streets. At the Badgers football game, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department arrested 28 students and ejected 49, which is an increase from a similar night game last year. UWPD arrested 18 students and ejected 39 from a 2011 game against University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

Pedersen said of the offensive line following the workout. ?That was good to see.? Union seeks to join lawsuit against adidas

In the midst of a contract lawsuit between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and its primary licensing partner adidas, a union representing unpaid workers at an Indonesian factory contracted by adidas requested to be part of the university?s lawsuit against the apparel company, a move UW-Madison?s Labor Licensing Policy Committee supports. The request comes nearly two months after negotiations between UW-Madison and adidas failed to resolve the dispute over whether or not adidas owes more than 2,700 workers nearly $2 million in severance pay after an adidas-contracted Indonesian factory, PT Kizone, closed down in January 2011.

When asked during his Monday news conference for the worst-case scenario, Bielema said, “We don?t get better.”

Charges delayed for 3 accused in Montee Ball attack

Charges expected to be filed Monday against three UW-Madison students arrested for an attack last month on Badgers running back Montee Ball were delayed for a week, Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne said. Ozanne told a court commissioner he did not receive all the police reports.

Unwanted Ironman participant ? alleged drunken driver who crashed marathon course

The Ironman Wisconsin triathlon had an unwanted participant Sunday night ? an alleged drunken driver who drove past barricades and over traffic cones onto the marathon course, nearly striking runners and spectators before coming to a stop. Michael Potter of Madison was tentatively charged with his alleged fourth drunken driving offense after his arrest at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday at North Park Street and Langdon Street, according to a news release from the UW-Madison Police Department.

Ironman triathlon takes over Madison

A University of Wisconsin-Madison chemistry professor crossed the finish line in just over nine hours Sunday at Madison?s annual Ironman triathlon, where thousands of family members, supporters and volunteers packed the streets to wildly cheer on approximately 2,900 competitors. Thomas Brunold, 43, is a chemistry professor at UW-Madison. He has crossed an Ironman triathlon finish line 12 times, and this year he finished tenth overall and first in the amateur division.

A quick cover-to-cover flip through the latest issue of Sports Illustrated produced two prominent references to the University of Wisconsin football team. One was a photo of Camp Randall Stadium in the Lineup section entitled “American Idyll.??It was taken during the season opener with Northern Iowa on Sept. 1. The other was in the Scorecard section where Dan Patrick interviewed former Badgers quarterback Russell Wilson, now the surprise rookie starter in Seattle. There was another UW reference in the magazine, but you had to dig fairly deep to find it. When you did, you couldn?t help but be saddened.

Ironman triathlon on Sunday will cause the usual detours and delays

The fictional Ironman of movies can fly; Madison drivers probably would like that ability on Sunday to avoid congestion and delays when the Ironman Wisconsin triathlon hits the streets. Close to 3,000 of the world?s best athletes will be in Madison on Sunday for the 12th annual Ironman, which will push city buses out of downtown and cause traffic delays downtown, on the UW-Madison campus and along the 112-mile bicycle race route.

The issue came up again on Tuesday, during the Big Ten Conference coaches? teleconference, after some Michigan State players were admonished by Spartans coach Mark Dantonio for some disrespectful tweets about Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson. Bielema?s Twitter policy essentially is that he has no policy, just some time-worn advice about only tweeting things that would not be objected to by players? mothers.

(CNN)- Penn State will have to return all of the football trophies won during a 14-year span as a result of sanctions handed down by the National Collegiate Athletic Association for school?s role in the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal, a school official said Wednesday. The move is another blow to the State College community, which has been plagued by the scandal for nine months.

UW football: Players get message to buckle up helmets

When the NCAA was in the process of adopting new safety rules for college football involving players losing their helmets, University of Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema had somebody go back and look at all of the Badgers? plays last season. According to the NCAA, helmets came off an average of twice per game, which added up to more than 200 times during the season. Bielema said some teams had helmets come off 30 or 40 times in a season.

Police arrest 3 Madison men for Aug. 1 attack on Badgers’ Montee Ball

Three 21-year-old Madison men were arrested Tuesday on tentative charges of being a party to substantial battery for the Aug. 1 attack on University of Wisconsin running back Montee Ball. Madison police arrested Deonte J. Wilson, Robert A. Wilks and Wendell J. Venerable. Police said they believe the men were involved in the 2:15 a.m. attack, which occurred in the 500 block of University Avenue as Ball was walking home from a Downtown bar and restaurant.

University of Wisconsin senior running back Montee Ball did not vote for himself to be a team captain, even though it was allowed. For a while, as the captains were being announced to the team on Tuesday night, Ball had to briefly wonder if many of his teammates voted for him, either.

Madison Marathon moving to November

MADISON, Wis.-The full Madison Marathon is moving to November in 2013. In the past, hot weather has plagued the Madison Marathon in May. Organizers have twice called it off mid-race, and they cancelled the full marathon this year. So, some suggested moving the marathon from spring to fall. Late Wednesday, Madison Festivals Inc. board members unanimously agreed to move the marathon to Nov. 10, 2013.
