Chris Rickert: In Chadima case, what did they know and when?

Wisconsin State Journal

Three weeks ago, we were probably satisfied ? and happy ? that the John Chadima story had run its course….But now that as many as two people have come forward to credibly allege that Chadima assaulted them, the saga continues, if with a different focus and higher stakes.

….To his credit, UW interim chancellor David Ward has directed the panel investigating the latest allegations of abuse against Chadima to inform him of “any other matters (that) come to your attention about which I should know” ? like, for instance, a cover-up. Ward’s mandate did not include specific instructions to question athletic director Barry Alvarez or football coach Bret Bielema, said Vince Sweeney, the vice chancellor for university relations.

Barbara Smith: Follow Wisconsin Idea and pay living wage

Wisconsin State Journal

Since UW-Madison has $77 million to give Camp Randall a facelift, I assume there is no reason any longer for the university to deny a living wage to workers who serve the facility. Currently, temp workers making around $8 an hour are used to clean up after sporting events and graduation. UW should do the decent thing and use staff custodians to do the work.

Market, and scenes filmed in instantly recognizable Madison locations, from State Street to Mickie?s Dairy Bar. Walsh even repurposed Badgermania to his advantage. “We have a big (political) rally in the show, so what we did is we just filmed on a football Saturday, and put our actors in the middle of the crowd,” said Walsh, who rented a house with his family in Middleton during the shoot. Via email, Webb said that Madison, which hasn?t had much experience with television and movie productions, was a very accommodating place to shoot a series. “It was out of the pathway of most TV productions where the locals are really resistant to accommodating film crews,” he said. “In Madison, people were generally game.”

The WIAA?s agreement with the Kohl Center expires in 2013. “We want to do what it takes to make this successful,” said Deb Archer, president of the Greater Madison Convention and Visitors Bureau. The apparel giant met the Thursday deadline set by UW-Madison interim Chancellor David Ward to respond to allegations of sweatshop abuses at a factory Adidas subcontracted with in Indonesia. But a statement released by the company Thursday evening makes clear that Adidas still isn?t willing to admit to any wrongdoing. If recent history is any indication, this stance will likely lead UW-Madison officials to start the process of ending its lucrative contract with Adidas.

WKOW-TV 27

MADISON (WKOW) — More than a week after former UW senior athletics administrator John Chadima?s alleged sex assault of a student at a Rose Bowl party, follow up by a UW police official was declined on the behalf of the victim by two unnamed UW employees.

“I provided them with a business card of our detective to contact should anyone need to talk to the police,” Lt. Jason Whitney states in a police report on his contact with the UW staff members. “I was informed that the information was passed along to the victim and no one had any further questions or concerns,” said Lt. Andy Baggot: Brave acts glossed over in Chadima scandal

Madison.com

….It required a sense of bravery on the part of the alleged victim, a UW student employee, to speak out immediately about being sexually assaulted and verbally threatened by Chadima, a high-ranking athletic department official who has since resigned in disgrace. That the student, a 22-year-old man, insisted the incident be kept quiet until after the bowl game, lest it be a distraction to the UW football team for its Jan. 2 game vs. Oregon, strikes me as an extraordinary personal sacrifice. The same goes for his desire not to make a criminal complaint against Chadima.

On Campus: Explainer: Why police aren’t investigating Chadima allegation

Wisconsin State Journal

In the wake of an allegation that a then-senior UW athletic official sexually assaulted a student, some people have wondered why police are not investigating the incident. The answer is simple, said UW Police Chief Sue Riseling: the student did not want to file a police report about John Chadima, former senior associate athletic director.

“We allow victims in our society to decide, especially if they’re adults, to decide what they want and don’t want,” she said.
