2 Republican bills would ban transgender women and girls from competing in female sports

Wisconsin Republicans released two proposals Wednesday that would ban transgender girls and women from participating in female sports at every grade level and in college.

The bills, authored by Republican Rep. Barbara Dittrich of Oconomowoc and Sen. Dan Knodl of Germantown, would bar male and transgender female students attending publicly-funded K-12 schools, University of Wisconsin System campuses and state technical colleges from competing in sports designated for females.

Wheaties, the iconic brand that’s pictured prominent athletes on its orange cereal boxes since the 1930s, will release a new box that features J.J. and T.J. Watt on the front. The University of Wisconsin standouts have combined for four NFL Defensive Player of the Year trophies, and J.J. has been busy in his first offseason of retirement, recently announcing he’d be joining the NFL on CBS crew in the fall.

Ball, a two-time All-American tailback and 5,000-plus-yard rusher with 83 career touchdowns, learned in late March that he will be inducted into the Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame. As one of 13 members in the 2023 Class – headlined by J.J. Watt – Ball will be recognized on Hall of Fame weekend, Sept. 15-16 in Madison.

Wisconsin football linebacker reinstated after OWI arrest

Athletic director Chris McIntosh reinstated Turner after an inquiry into his OWI arrest on June 26, according to a news release Monday. Turner’s arrest triggered the athletic department’s student-athlete discipline policy, which was changed last year to include OWI in the offenses that warranted automatic suspensions. Turner was not allowed to participate in practices, but had access to the weight room and sports medicine facilities.

The ideal candidate was someone who’s worked at different levels, as a head coach and an assistant, with various levels of program support and, yes, with goaltending experience to fill in a gap on the staff in that area. The UW System: A total of $1.7 billion will go to projects across the UW System statewide. Some of the big ticket items in there include $285 million for replacing Camp Randall Sports Center and turning it into an indoor football facility, $347 million for replacing the Engineering Building and demolishing the Computer Aided Engineering Facility at UW-Madison, and $231 million for demolition of Phillips Hall and the completion of a new Science/Health Science Building at UW-Eau Claire.

University of Wisconsin running back Braelon Allen hosted his second annual charity softball game inside Herr-Baker Field on Saturday afternoon. A press release by the Fond du Lac Spiders, a Northwoods League team, in February announced that proceeds would “benefit The Braelon Allen Fund, the Fond du Lac Boys & Girls Club, the Fond du Lac YMCA, and the Fond du Lac Junior Football League.”

How The Varsity Collective kicked Wisconsin’s NIL era into high gear

The Varsity Collective is separate from UW but has worked with UW athletic director Chris McIntosh and others in the athletic department to ensure its program is aligned with the university’s NIL guidelines. How the new Big Ten football scheduling model affects Wisconsin football

New conference commissioner Tony Petitti announced the league’s new schedule system and unveiled home and away opponents for the 2024 and 2025 seasons on a Big Ten Network broadcast Thursday afternoon. The new model nixes the division setup the conference has had since 2011, and the top two teams from the new 16-team league will face off for the Big Ten title game at the conclusion of the regular season. The changes were brought about after last summer’s announcement that UCLA and Southern Cal would be joining the Big Ten starting next season.

The PGA Tour Champions in 2021 extended their agreement to host the AmFam at University Ridge through 2027, but there was language in the contract that allowed for the tournament to move before the end of the deal. In actuality, the extensions were signed in two-year increments, so the two parties are still working out details of the contract to host the tournament at University Ridge in 2024, according to Justin Doherty, UW’s senior associate athletic director for external communications.

Former St. Cloud State standout Nick Oliver joins UW men’s hockey staff

Nick Oliver played in a Frozen Four and coached in one.

His next job will be to help the Wisconsin men’s hockey team get back to the college’s game showcase event.

Badgers coach Mike Hastings announced the hire of Oliver on Wednesday. He comes to UW after earning USHL coach of the year distinction this past season after leading the Fargo Force to the regular-season championship.

In the 608: Wisconsin Football 100 Days to Kickoff Scavenger Hunt

For the second consecutive year, in celebration of that milestone date, the Badgers are hosting a statewide “Wisconsin Football 100 Days to Kickoff Scavenger Hunt.” Partnering with communities across the state, UW staff will place 100 mini Badger football helmets in each of four regions across the state. The specific cities where the helmets can be found are: Burlington, Hudson, Madison, Mineral Point, Oshkosh, Sun Prairie, Verona, Waukesha and Wausau.
