The Bear Jew: Gabe Carimi (JewishJournal.com)

Chicago has had its share of great athletes, Michael Jordan, Frank Thomas, and Stan Mikita to name a few. The Bears have probably the richest of the Chicago teams with players like Walter Payton, Gayle Sayers, and Dick Butkus. But it has been a while since any Chicago team has had a great Jewish athlete. The Cubs had Ken Holtzman and Steve Stone but besides those two it has been hard for Chicagoans to rally around a top Jewish star. The one Chicago Jewish athlete that has Hall of Fame status is Sid Luckman. Luckman retired in 1950 and since Chicago Jews have been searching. And with the 29th in the 2011 NFL Draft the wait might have ended. The Chicago Bears selected Gabe Carimi out of the University of Wisconsin.

Campus Connection: Nebraska kicked out of exclusive club

Capital Times

Some professors on the UW-Madison campus questioned whether the sports side of the equation — Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany and league athletic directors — wielded too much power in making the University of Nebraska the 12th member of the conference last summer.

Nonetheless, when the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors voted unanimously to approve Nebraska?s entry to the league effective July 1, 2011 — with competition to begin in all sports for the 2011-12 academic year — most agreed that Nebraska was a good fit academically with the other Big Ten institutions.

Barry Alvarez: Give UW-Madison tools to compete

Wisconsin State Journal

Right now the UW-Madison is operating on an uneven field that, if not corrected, will slowly erode our great university?s ability to compete – for students, faculty and research dollars, just to name a few – not only nationally, but around the world as well. We all know how economically challenging these past few years have been for our country. Those challenges exist on college campuses as well, including UW-Madison. I always taught my players to meet challenges head-on and that?s what is necessary now. Chancellor Biddy Martin has a plan that would give UW-Madison some of the decision-making flexibility necessary for our university to continue to compete on a national and international level.
