Gabe Carimi and John Moffitt, the fifth-year seniors who anchor the left side of the University of Wisconsin?s offensive line, have been named first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press. Carimi, the Outland Trophy winner at left tackle, and Moffitt, who plays left guard, are the foundation of a unit that helped usher the Badgers (11-1) to a share of their first Big Ten Conference title and Rose Bowl appearance since 1999.

Tight end Lance Kendricks and defensive end J.J. Watt were named to the second team, while running back John Clay was named to the third team.

The conference also on Monday unveiled a new logo — it is a block “Big Ten” with the numeral 10 embedded in the word last two letters of Big — as well as two-person trophy names for 18 new football awards, including the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy and the Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year.

Governor Jim Doyle was a junior high student on Madison?s West Side in the 1950s when he began to hear tall tales about the athletic exploits of a tall, slightly older kid from the other side of town. “The rumor was he hit a home run over the left-field wall at Breese Stevens Field and that?s about 750 feet or something like that,” Doyle said. “We believed it. That?s how big Pat Richter was.” The legend of Pat Richter would only grow in the years after that. After starring in football, basketball and baseball at East High School, Richter won nine letters in three sports at the University of Wisconsin and spent eight seasons as an end and punter for the NFL?s Washington Redskins. Years later, after a successful career as an executive at Oscar Mayer, Richter returned to UW as athletic director and orchestrated an athletic revival at his alma mater.

UW football: Carimi becomes second Badger to win Outland trophy

An emotional Gabe Carimi became just the second University of Wisconsin football player in school history to win the Outland Trophy on Thursday night at the College Football Awards Show.

The only other Badgers player to win the award given to the nation?s top interior lineman, on offense or defense, was Joe Thomas, who preceded Carimi as the starting left tackle. A four-year starter who has started all 48 games he has played in, Carimi is a two-time All-Big Ten Conference first-team selection and was also named the league?s offensive lineman of the year this season.

The Badger Herald has expressed outrage that some students are selling their Rose Bowl tickets at a profit under a system that does not violate UW rules against scalping. Herald editors went so far as to name some of the students who sold their tickets online. Greed aside, where?s the harm if students in need sell their tickets to those who can afford the price bump?

The Big Ten commissioner says his conference has already sacrificed much for the good of college sports by giving up some access to the Rose Bowl, and he sees no reason why it should give even more to create a football playoff. Jim Delany was joined by several other commissioners Wednesday in Manhattan at the IMG Intercollegiate Athletic Forum. Lest you forget, the student newspaper published a list of about three dozen students who purchased Rose Bowl tickets, then tried to sell them for a profit online. But today, the editors removed the list of names in the online article and replaced them with a note.

Once we got official word that the Badgers were headed to the Rose Bowl — could an anthem be far behind? Anthony Lamarr Brown wrote, “We?re Smelling Roses,” to fill that role. The catchy rap number celebrates the Badgers victorious season and pokes fun at their opponents (“We?re smelling roses/We treat the other teams like a pocketful of posers”). Directed by “Teach Me How to Bucky”?s Logan Cascia, the music video features UW-Madison notables such as Chancellor Biddy Martin, UW Marching Band Director Mike Leckrone, and former Rose Bowl standout Ron Dayne. It also features lyricist JDante and singer LaVar Jovan Charleston.

UW-Madison officials and other state officials said the composition of UW?s official Rose Bowl traveling party, and costs associated with that travel are being monitored closely, especially after budget-busting travel in connection with the Badgers? 1999 Rose Bowl appearance.

Coaches’ contracts carry bonuses, provisions for unusual tasks

Coaches’ contracts with Football Bowl Subdivision schools can be more than a matter of money. Some of the more unusual provisions of current deals:
Wisconsin: Bret Bielema?s contract includes an article titled “Medical Decisions.” It says the coach “understands and agrees the final decision regarding student-athlete participation in organized practices and/or competitions shall be made” by the athletic department?s medical and training room staff.
