The increasing trend of college athletes leaving early for the NHL isn?t likely to change. The moment is important enough to Mike Eaves that the University of Wisconsin men?s hockey coach will miss practice today.

UW footall: Taking a look at BCS at-large chances

Madison.com

The University of Wisconsin football team?s road to the Rose Bowl didn?t change over the weekend. The best way for the Badgers to get to Pasadena, Calif., and a potential berth against TCU — How?s that for tradition? — is to win their last three games and for Michigan State to lose.

The good news for UW is it strengthened its position in the Bowl Championship Series standings, moving up to two spots to seventh, with an average of .7349. Ohio State is the next-closest Big Ten team in ninth at .6613.

And just in case they miss one, Zastrow is quick to point it out.

UW tailback Ball prepares for when he’s needed

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Week after week, sophomore Montee Ball prepared as if he was Wisconsin?s starting tailback, knowing all along he would be fortunate to get into the game.

“The neat thing about it is that he probably only gets about .?.?. a dozen snaps in practice,” UW running backs coach John Settle said before practice Sunday. “But his film study, he still prepares just like he is going to play every week.”

Green Bay Press-Gazette

The University of Wisconsin is in position for another appearance in one of college football?s marquee bowls. Just don?t expect the Badgers to talk about it any time soon.

UW cross country: Men win 12th straight Big Ten title; women place seventh

Madison.com

Landon Peacock?s mad dash to the finish line to win the Big Ten Conference men?s cross country individual championship Sunday at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course was so dramatic it should take its place as one of the greatest moments of the renowned University of Wisconsin program. But it was a selfless act by sophomore Maverick Darling to set up the Badgers for their 12th consecutive team title that earned the loudest applause from those in the know.

Campus Connection: Dumb jocks stereotype takes hit

Capital Times

Would you be surprised to learn student-athletes who compete at the top level of college sports actually graduate at a higher rate than their classmates? That?s not the case at UW-Madison, which is among the national leaders in making sure all students who start school earn a degree. But more on that later.

According to a report from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, 79 percent of all Division I athletes who entered college in 2003 graduated within six years. That figure is slightly higher for student-athletes at UW-Madison 81 percent.

Breaking down Wisconsin’s BCS problem

ESPN.com

It hit me sometime between Jay Cutler?s first and fourth interceptions Sunday, as I grew tired of Bears-Redskins and began to survey the bowl landscape for the Big Ten. Coach Bret Bielema and Wisconsin could finish 11-1 and still be angry when bowl matchups are decided. My thought: Wisconsin might get totally screwed. Or, to be politically correct, the Badgers might get BCSed.

Copycat logos are pitting high schools and colleges in a trademark turf war

Washington Post

Noted: Woodlands High in Texas used Wisconsins “motion W” logo on its team uniforms until university officials caught wind of it and had the school remove the insignia in 2007, said Cindy Van Matre, Wisconsins licensing director. The high school eventually created its own logo. In all, Wisconsin has asked nearly 40 schools in over two dozen states to stop using its logo and phase out its use on Web sites, uniforms and elsewhere. The list includes Westfield High in Chantilly.

UW coaches lighting a fire under Clay

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Badger running back John Clay?s rushing numbers against the Buckeyes (21 carries, 104 yards, two touchdowns) didn?t match his performances in UW?s first games this season, but he ran more effectively than he had all season with the explosive power that must be his signature.

Bielema winning converts, becoming less-polarizing figure

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

So what do you think of Bret Bielema now?

Granted, it?s not the most important question here at a fairly critical juncture of the season, the midpoint between Wisconsin?s victory against No.?1 Ohio State and another big game Saturday at Iowa, but I?m asking anyway because it?s the one issue that never seems to leave the room, no matter the state of the Badgers.

Campus Connection: Big win, scary moment at Camp Randall

Capital Times

To be clear, it wasn?t a replay of the tragedy at Camp Randall Stadium in 1993. Not even close. But this raw video taken by the Cap Times? Todd Milewski Saturday night shows some frightened red-clad fans screaming for help as they are pinned against a fence at the bottom of the student section.

Thankfully, police reported only two minor injuries following the Badgers? big win over top-ranked Ohio State. A look at Milewski?s video shows things could have been worse.

On Campus: Repeat of devastating 1993 stampede avoided at Badgers game Saturday

Wisconsin State Journal

When thousands of UW-Madison students rushed onto Camp Randall field in jubilation Saturday night after the Badgers? win over No. 1 Ohio State, it might have reminded some onlookers of “the crush” in 1993. But unlike that horrific stampede – when 69 people were taken to the hospital after a game against the University of Michigan – only two people reported minor injuries Saturday.

National spotlight is on Madison with Ohio State ? and ESPN ? in town

Wisconsin State Journal

For years Vince Sweeney would extol the value of athletics to the broader purposes of the University of Wisconsin. That was part of his job as an associate athletic director. Now in his new role as vice chancellor for university relations, Sweeney is even more convinced of that value. And when it comes to value of an athletic event, the football game between the 18th-ranked Badgers and top-ranked Ohio State at Camp Randall Stadium is immeasurable. “I would say that for one 36-hour period it?s the center of the college sports universe,” Sweeney said.
