Campus Connection: UW-Madison helps persuade Nike to reverse course

Capital Times

Reacting in part to pressure applied by UW-Madison, athletic apparel giant Nike has agreed “to help improve the lives of workers affected by the Hugger and Vision Tex factory closures in Honduras.”

….”I think this is one of the biggest victories that the student anti-sweatshop movement has had,” says Jane Collins, a UW-Madison professor of community and environmental sociology, and author of the 2003 book “Threads: Gender, Labor and Power in the Global Apparel Industry.”

“This is precedent-setting. Nike does not very often admit that it did something that needed fixing,” adds Collins, who also is a member of the university’s Labor Licensing Policy Committee.

Just Ask Us: Why does Camp Randall no longer host major concerts?

Wisconsin State Journal

Camp Randall hasn?t hosted any concerts since 1997, but the UW Athletic Department is still open to it if the opportunity presents itself. Justin Doherty, UW?s assistant athletic director for external relations, said there haven?t been many opportunities in recent years, but the department would consider hosting a concert if it made financial sense and scheduling worked out, since there are activities going on in the stadium year-round.

University of Wisconsin chancellor Carolyn ?Biddy? Martin was roughly 30 minutes and 20 questions into an interview when she casually invoked the name of her celebrated predecessor. Chris Rickert: Flap over bus-driver pay says less about them than it does about us

Wisconsin State Journal

I?ve been hoping to catch a glimpse of one of those six-figure Metro Transit drivers. You know the ones. Those overpaid working stiffs who do nothing but drive around all day in air-conditioned buses, raking in our hard-earned tax dollars like so many Capitol-bound commuters. For comparison?s sake, UW Athletics Director Barry Alvarez and UW football coach Bret Bielema get $500,000 and $400,000, respectively, per year out of a public university?s coffers. Should they? The not-for-profit, tax-exempt UW Foundation puts another several hundred thousand more into their pockets. Should it?

UW men’s basketball: Harris teaches kids other side of sports

Madison.com

The 76 kids Devin Harris met inside steamy Camp Randall Stadium Wednesday afternoon were on a field trip to learn what it?s like to be a student-athlete at the University of Wisconsin. Harris sponsored the field trip that emphasized the student much more than the athlete. It was part of a successful camp, which goes beyond basketball, the star guard for the New Jersey Nets runs in Madison and Milwaukee. The former standout with the UW men?s basketball team is one of the lucky few who realized his dream. He is playing pro basketball and has financial security. But he?ll tell anyone who wants to listen that he still needs more than his point guard skills to survive and thrive.

Plain Talk: Only some UW hiring irks Nass

Capital Times

I went searching our archives last week, typing in the search box the names of UW football coach Bret Bielema and state Rep. Steve Nass.

What I hoped to find was a story about Nass, R-town of La Grange, the fearless basher of all things University of Wisconsin, calling on the attorney general to investigate Barry Alvarez?s hiring of Bret Bielema to replace him as the Badgers? football coach. But, as I figured, no story popped up.

Baggot: UW?s gender discrepancy a product of quality hires

When Danny Lanphear was inducted into the Madison Sports Hall of Fame, he was overshadowed by the three other members of the 1989 induction class.

….Lanphear has been remembered again ? this time with his inclusion in the UW Athletic Hall of Fame. It?s likely, too, that Lanphear will once again be cast in the shadows of some others in the 2010 class.

Paul W. Schlecht: Citizens being taken for a ride as Bike Reich pursues elusive platinum rating

Capital Times

Dear Editor: The recent Wisconsin State Journal headline ?Madison embarks on quest to receive ?platinum? bike friendliness rating? should have appeared back in October of ?06, when Mayor Bike Shorts and the Bike Reich formed the Platinum Biking City Planning Committee to secure the League of American Bicyclists? coveted platinum rating.

While less than a scouting badge to the known universe, it?s become the city?s white whale and they now believe they?re ready to set the harpoon. Where?s all that time and money gone? Someone must be confusing activity with measurable results.

Campus Connection: Cornell follows UW’s lead in pressuring Nike

Capital Times

It took awhile, but another institution finally decided to follow the University of Wisconsin-Madison?s lead in putting a little pressure on athletic apparel giant Nike.

Back on April 9, UW-Madison decided to cut ties with Nike due to alleged labor rights abuses at two factories in Honduras. Nike paid UW-Madison nearly $50,000 for the right to use the university?s name or marks — such as Bucky Badger or the “motion W” — on apparel it made during the most recent academic year.

Oates: UW a wild card in Big Ten shuffle

Madison.com

Expanding the Big Ten Conference was difficult enough, but now comes the really hard part. Dividing up the Big Ten now that Nebraska has become its 12th team. Among the remaining items on the Big Ten?s fast-moving expansion agenda is splitting the conference into two divisions for football starting in 2011. There is no easy solution to the riddle of divisional placement and no one?s going to get exactly what they want, which is why the University of Wisconsin could end up being one of the key variables.

Lucas: Preview magazines high on Badgers

Madison.com

There was the anticipation during spring practice in April that the University of Wisconsin would be getting some national recognition in June when the college football preview magazines went on sale.

When starting quarterback Scott Tolzien was asked about the prospect of lofty expectations for the 2010 Badgers, he said, â??The key is to block it out and thatâ??s a hard thing to do when youâ??ve got guys reading the magazines.â?

Hereâ??s a sampling of what they might read: Lindyâ??s has Wisconsin ranked No. 6 in the nation in its preseason poll behind Alabama, Boise State, Ohio State, Texas and Florida.

Campus Connection: What’s wrong with being intellectually engaged?

Capital Times

** Ever wonder why many higher education leaders cringe when they hear cries that colleges need to spend less time teaching the classical subjects and more time giving students the tools theyâ??ll need to get a job in the “real world?”

** Auburn University is planning to build a campus in China, the Birmingham (Ala.) News reported earlier this week. This move would make Auburn “the first U.S. college with a major physical presence in that country.”

Did tail wag the dog in Nebraska decision?

Capital Times

….Some academics on the UW-Madison campus are asking if the sports side of the equation â?? Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany and league athletic directors â?? wielded too much power in making the University of Nebraska the 12th member of the conference earlier this month.

â??Itâ??s an unfortunate, to my mind, reflection of the times that athletics are driving academics,â? says UW-Madison communication arts professor Rob Asen. â??The fact that the primary decision makers here are Jim Delany and the athletic directors to me is disturbing. It seems to me like the educational leaders at UW-Madison and elsewhere are sort of abdicating their role as leaders.â?

Donald Downs, a UW-Madison political science professor, sees it the same way.

Notre Dame: Price of independence

Whenever somebody from Notre Dame talks about reasserting the universityâ??s independence during the ongoing college conference realignment discussion, I imagine a thirtysomething bachelor still living in his parentsâ?? basement.

Dave Searles: Add Kentucky and Missouri to Big Ten too

Capital Times

Dear Editor: The Big Ten athletic conference should be renamed the Big Midwest and should be a conference of big state universities of the Midwest. It should not be seeking new members outside of the Midwest. It should let Penn State go because Pennsylvania is not part of the Midwest and should let Northwestern go because it is a private university with a much smaller enrollment than the big state universities in the conference.
