UW women’s rowing: Bryans gets Big Ten honor

Bebe Bryans was named Big Ten Coach of the year Wednesday after leading the University of Wisconsin womenâ??s rowing team to its first conference title.

Bryans is the first UW coach to win the award, but it is the third time she has received the honor. She also was lauded in 2000 and 2003 while at Michigan State.

Top collegiate cyclists competing in Madison

The USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships will be held in Madison, Wis. this weekend for the first time since 2004. Nearly 500 athletes from about 100 colleges and universities will compete in 18 events beginning Friday. The events are hosted by the University of Wisconsin.

UW athletes show their off the field talents

A number of Badger athletes recently showed off their non-athletic talents at a special event at the Overture Center. The event is called the Buckinghams, and itâ??s presented by the National W Club. UW student athletes are recognized for their academic achievements, and many of them show off their non-athletic talents during the event.

Update: UW-La Crosse student released, no charges filed in Mifflin sex assault, reports say

A 20-year-old UW-La Crosse student arrested on Saturday on tentative charges that he sexually assaulted a 19-year-old UW-Madison female student has been released from jail with no charges being filed against him, according to published reports.

The La Crosse Tribune reported that Bebeto Yepmo Yewah was released from the Dane County Jail on Tuesday, after District Attorney Brian Blanchard declined to prosecute the case.

“The office lacks sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime was committed,” Blanchard said in an e-mail to WKOW-TV, the newspaper article said.

Yewah is a national champion wrestler at 133 pounds for the UW-La Crosse wrestling team. He is a sophomore from Lansing, Mich.

Wisconsin extends Bo Ryan’s contract through 2015

The University of Wisconsin has approved a one-year contract extension for menâ??s basketball coach Bo Ryan. The athletic board on Friday extended Ryanâ??s rolling five-year contract through May of 2015. Athletics department spokesman Justin Doherty said financial terms of the contract were not finalized.

The University of Wisconsin Athletic Board approved contract extensions on Friday for the head coaches of five winter sports, including womenâ??s basketball coach Lisa Stone, who had two additional years put on her contract. Stone had her contract extended through May of 2015, which is the same for menâ??s basketball coach Bo Ryan and menâ??s hockey coach Mike Eaves.

UW wins appeal on behalf of Brust

Wisconsin has won its appeal to the Big Ten Conference, opening the door for Mundelein (Ill.) High School senior guard Ben Brust to sign with the Badgers for their 2010 menâ??s basketball freshman class. The Big Tenâ??s 11-member committee of faculty representatives voted Friday in favor of UW and Brust to waive a league rule that prohibits athletes from transferring from one Big Ten school to another and remaining on scholarship.

Eaves faces major challenge in rebuilding his staff

Once the National Football League draft hit the seventh and final round Saturday, Chris Maragos had one wish: Go undrafted and then sign a free-agent contract.

“Once I got past the sixth round, we were hoping to go to free agency, so we could pick (a team),” the former Wisconsin free safety said Saturday night, “and get in a good situation.”

Not long after the 255th player was selected to close the draft, Maragos received a phone call from San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary and agreed to a free-agent deal.

Wisconsin’s O’Brien Schofield gets his chance with Arizona

Madison man is accused of stalking UW-Madison cross-country runner

A Madison man was charged Wednesday with stalking for allegedly giving a runner from the UW-Madison womenâ??s cross country team unwanted gifts, following her and constructing a shrine to her outside the teamâ??s practice facility.

David Hose, 21, of Madison, is scheduled to appear in court Thursday. According to a criminal complaint, the 20-year-old woman told police that she didnâ??t know Hose before the incidents began in August.

The first incident, the complaint states, was outside a State Street bar, where the woman said a man later identified as Hose was acting so bizarrely that she took his picture to document who he was.

No news on Big Ten expansion

Anyone anticipating a blockbuster announcement regarding the Big Ten Conferenceâ??s plans to expand the 11-team league had to be disappointed and perhaps a bit skeptical Wednesday. Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany, attending the BCS meetings in Scottsdale, Ariz., provided few new details on potential expansion. “There are no announcements, notifications, or is there a change in the timeline,” Delany told reporters.

Michigan poised to break outdoor hockey ticket sales record

More than seven months before The Big Chill arrives, the University of Michigan is within a hair of breaking the all-time ticket sales record for an outdoor hockey game. The school reports on its website that it has sold 73,513 tickets for the Dec. 11 game against Michigan State at Michigan Stadium — a.k.a The Big House. The University of Wisconsin hosted a hockey doubleheader in February at Camp Randall Stadium that drew 55,031.

The punch that ended varsity college boxing was a classic right hand delivered to the left temple of a beloved Badger boxer named Charlie Mohr. It happened 50 years ago Friday. On April 9, 1960, the University of Wisconsin was hosting the final night of the NCAA boxing tournament. The site was the Field House, which over the previous 25 years had regularly been filled with up to 15,000 fans. College boxing was enormously popular in Madison. The NCAA had an annual bracketed tournament, in the manner of the basketball tournament today, and UW had won eight of them.

Hockey squad similar to past national champions at Wisconsin

The comparisons that have been drawn between the last University of Wisconsin team to win the NCAA Division I menâ??s hockey title (in 2006) and the current group of players just two victories away from winning the seventh title in program history, are understandable.

The 2005-â??06 team, Mike Eavesâ?? fourth as UWâ??s head coach, was dominated by upperclassmen and in winning the national title took the final step in a rebuilding project that began with Eavesâ?? hiring in the spring of 2002.

Eavesâ?? current team is dominated by upperclassmen, most of whom talked openly before the season about making a run at the national title, and is the first UW team to reach the Frozen Four since â??06.
