Unprecedented Demand For UW Basketball Tickets

WKOW-TV 27

”It’s been kind of ridiculous trying to get season tickets thisÃ? year for a reasonable price.”Ã?  UW SophomoreÃ? Jeremy Lewis is frustrated.Ã?  He is an avid basketball fan, but his name was not drawn in the lottery for season tickets, so his only option now is to buy fromÃ? others – and one package of 4 seats isÃ? listed for sale on the internet for $2400.

Watch your step, Wiley warns band

Capital Times

Can you imagine going to a University of Wisconsin football game at Camp Randall Stadium and not hearing the marching band play “On Wisconsin”?

It could happen if band members don’t shape up, and band director Mike Leckrone may be on the hot seat as well.

UW Chancellor John Wiley apparently read the riot act to the band at a meeting on Oct. 5 after reports of shenanigans by band members when they took a road trip to play at the football game between the Badgers and the University of Michigan Wolverines at the Big House, aka Michigan Stadium, in Ann Arbor on Sept. 23.

Historic Madison: Threat to end football sparked riots

Capital Times

In 1906, football was nearly eliminated as a sport at the University of Wisconsin.

Football was, at the time, legalized mayhem. In 1904, 21 players were killed and 200 injured. There were no eligibility rules, players were hired to play, and they could switch teams from week to week. That year a national football reform movement was launched.

Oates: ESPN’s call leaves viewers blindsided again

Wisconsin State Journal

If you want to watch today’s football game between Northwestern and the University of Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium but don’t have a ticket, don’t worry.
Even though the Big Ten Conference matchup will appear on fewer television sets than your average NHL game, you won’t miss much.

Badgers revive 1940s memory (Denver Post)

Madison, Wis. – Sixty-one years after being present when a terrible telegram arrived at her grandparents’ home, Judy Corfield walked onto the Camp Randall Stadium field with Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez at halftime of the Badgers’ 41-9 victory over Northwestern on Saturday.

She was wearing her uncle’s musty but well-preserved letter sweater.

After joining the crowd in watching a video tribute to her uncle, an All-American hero, she looked up at the stadium’s upper-deck facade. A red banner was peeled away, exposing a number and name.

Stanley can’t seem to find his way

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

This season Booker Stanley would have been a fifth-year senior on the UW football team and likely would have been in coach Bret Bielema’s plans. But the world of big-time college football, where Badgers fans flock to Camp Randall Stadium on Saturdays in the fall, doesn’t exist any longer for Stanley.

Today, Stanley, 23, sits in a Dane County Jail cell, convicted of three felonies, including the sexual assault of a former girlfriend. The only football he sees is on a jailhouse television.

Badgers overcome errors

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Like most college football coaches, Bret Bielema doesn’t worry about his team’s poll position.

“That’s not in my hands,” Bielema said after UW’s 41-9, Big Ten Conference victory over Northwestern. “I don’t vote so I really don’t have any say in that.”

Stanley can’t seem to find way

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Madison – For as long as he can remember, fall meant football for Booker Stanley.

As a child, at Whitefish Bay High School and at the University of Wisconsin, Stanley longed for game day. It was a time when he could show the world that he was a star, a stocky running back with talent, promise and drive.

Badger Fans Frustrated Over Internet Broadcast

WISC-TV 3

MADISON, Wis. — It was so quiet one could hear a pin drop in living rooms and bars across Dane County. That’s because television sets were Badgerless on Saturday.

ESPN chose not to broadcast the game for the first time in a long time.

“This bar is quiet,” said one patron. “There’s no one around.”

Badger Reception Interception

WKOW-TV 27

Most badger fans who weren’t inside Camp Randall didn’t get to see this.

ESPN had exclusive rights to the game and decided to only air it on ESPN360 radio or through Verizon’s DSL Internet service.

Badger Game Black Out

NBC-15

Not even John Melahn will be sitting around his TV this weekend while the Badgers are playing. And that’s really too bad, because Melahn is having a party to watch the Badger game.

Last line of defense

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Brian Elliott wasn’t always the Brian Elliott.

A year ago the University of Wisconsin goaltender was a relatively unproven junior about to begin his first season as the No. 1 man. We know now that he was more than capable, but back then, Badgers coach Mike Eaves didn’t know if Elliott could play back-to-back nights.

He made the jump from ordinary to extraordinary and the Badgers won a national title as a result.

Will anyone make that kind of leap this year?

Verizon is hot Badger game ticket

Capital Times

If you have a computer with Verizon DSL Internet service, expect to be very popular Saturday.

Other than having a ticket to the Big Ten football game between Wisconsin and Northwestern, you possess the only legal way of seeing the game live in the Madison area.

Calling for a watchdog

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents should consider adopting a policy in which the contracts of all athletic directors and coaches include a clause that addresses the need to monitor athletes academic performance, a new UW audit concludes.

Uw ‘rolled Over’

Wisconsin State Journal

There are several eye-opening passages in Barry Alvarez’s recently published autobiography, but perhaps the most controversial relates to how University of Wisconsin officials handled The Shoe Box affair.

As football players, Gary Russell and Danny Upchurch had little in common. Upchurch was a lesser known Gophers punt and kickoff-return specialist in 2002. Russell ran for 18 touchdowns last season, setting a University of Minnesota record.

Hit and Run: Why won’t Bielema denounce cheap shot?

Capital Times

….if a University of Wisconsin football player wrenches the leg of an opponent but, luckily, the foe isn’t seriously injured, is such an action still a dirty play?

Hmmm.

In the eyes of first-year UW head coach Bret Bielema, the answer to the second question, apparently, is no.

A couple items to ponder while biking through the UW Arboretum:** If a tree falls in a forest, but no one is there to hear it, does it still make a sound?Hmmm.Likewise, if a University of Wisconsin football player wrenches the leg of an opponent but, luckily, the foe isn’t seriously injured, is such an action still a dirty play?

Versatile defense handles Indiana

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

With the University of Wisconsin nearing the midway point of its regular-season schedule, Bret Bielema has formulated some strong opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of his football team.

Unranked UW (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten Conference) boasts a fast, versatile defense that should keep the Badgers in every game left on the schedule. UW showed against Michigan it has the stamina to stay with a team determined to run the ball and Saturday against Indiana displayed the ability to blanket the passing lanes with seven or eight nimble defenders.

UW sports: USA Hockey again tabs Johnson

USA Hockey keeps calling – and Mark Johnson keeps answering.

The UW women’s hockey coach today was named to lead the U.S. select team that will compete in the prestigious Four Nations Cup, held Nov. 7-11 in Kitchener, Ontario. Recently, he was appointed head coach of the 2007 U.S. women’s national team.

UW women’s hockey: NCAA champion Badgers seek a following

How many University of Wisconsin women’s hockey players can you name? If you were walking down the street side-by-side with the best player in the country, would you even know it?

The defending national champions begin their road to repeat Friday and they hope that their continuing success brings more optimistic answers to those questions and draws bigger crowds to the Kohl Center this season.

Whos No. 1?

Badger Herald

Across the country, Big Ten football is held in the highest regard as one of the premiere conferences in college football, because of the history, the tradition and the consistently high level of competition within the league.

UW sports: National championship coaches talk like champions

Wisconsin State Journal

It began innocently enough, with a telephone call and a routine question.
University of Wisconsin men’s cross country coach Jerry Schumacher was on the other end of the line earlier this month, talking about the challenges his team faces as it prepares to defend the NCAA title it won in November.

Reminded there are three other coaches on campus who won national championships during the 2005-06 school year – a school record – Schumacher was asked if he had talked to any of them about the unique burden they share.

Baseball: Selig touches all the bases during visit to his alma mater

Capital Times

More than 50 years ago, Bud Selig was an undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin, spending his nights in the campus library preparing for a career that never came.

“I was one of those rare people. I came here to study,” Selig recalled. “I thought I was going to be a history professor. Obviously my career took different twists and turns. Not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined where my career would have taken me and what would have happened.”

UW football notes: Kamoku hit addressed

Baggot: Gratitude, generosity show faces

Wisconsin State Journal

It would be great if one person’s generosity always produced another’s gratitude, but, for some reason, life doesn’t work that way.Sometimes the giver prefers to remain anonymous. Sometimes the receiver is inconsiderate. Sometimes the gift is woven into a process that disguises its true value, leaving the recipient with a blurred perspective.

John F. Uhler: Kudos to UW on disabled access

Capital Times

Dear Editor: In June I wrote a letter about access for disabled people at Camp Randall Stadium. One of the things I mentioned was the need for handrails in the portal entrances. Well, I noticed that handrails have been installed. That’s a great improvement.

The University of Wisconsin has also published improved stadium access diagrams as well. It still has some work to do on parking and seating, but it’s important to recognize progress when we see it.

Thanks, UW.

Persistence in the running game doesn’t pay off

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

As he sat in the cramped and steamy visitors’ quarters inside Michigan Stadium, Bret Bielema revealed the University of Wisconsin’s No. 1 offensive goal in its Big Ten Conference opener: To run the ball with power and persistence.

Although UW certainly exhibited persistence in running the ball, the ground game was powerless. UW isn’t going to beat any team getting just 46 rushing yards from its tailbacks and 12 net rushing yards, as it did in a 27-13 loss to Michigan.

UW football: Hodge suspended; Neal ready for double duty

Capital Times

The return of one-platoon football? Not quite. But University of Wisconsin sophomore Josh Neal may serve as a backup at fullback and middle linebacker Saturday in the Big Ten opener at Michigan.

It was announced Thursday that redshirt freshman Elijah Hodge has been suspended for violating the UW student-athlete discipline policy. Hodge was arrested Tuesday for operating a motor vehicle, a moped, without the owner’s consent. Because the school is still collecting information – no charges have been filed – Hodge could still be cleared of any wrongdoing which might change his status and availability for Saturday’s game.

UW gets an ‘F’ on hiring of coach

Wisconsin State Journal

UW-Madison Athletic Director Barry Alvarez understands why the university received a failing grade from the Black Coaches Association for its hiring of football coach Bret Bielema.
“They have a job and a responsibility according to what they know and how I went through the process,” Alvarez said of the BCA. “I understand why that grade is as it is.”

Intruding fan at Camp Randall tests ticket revocation policy

Capital Times

Like many in the crowd of 81,090 at Camp Randall Stadium last Saturday, Walter Dickey couldn’t help but notice the longest run of the day – by a guy who came out of the seats.

There the casually dressed runner was, waving as he went the length of the field and even striking the Heisman pose before being tackled and escorted off the field. There probably weren’t many, however, that had the same line of thinking as Dickey, the chair of the University of Wisconsin Athletic Board.

“One of my first thoughts is, ‘I wonder if this is covered by the policy,'” Dickey said.

Oates: Alvarez likely will take brats over beach

Wisconsin State Journal

It may be the height of the hurricane season, but there is a firestorm raging in South Florida over Miami football coach Larry Coker.
Coker has few remaining allies after a 31-7 loss at Louisville Saturday dropped Miami’s record to 1-2 for the first time since 1997 and knocked it out of the national polls for the first time since ’99. Despite winning a national title as a rookie coach in 2001 and coming within a questionable penalty of another one the next year, Coker is seen as a guy who won with Butch Davis’ players and is now presiding over the gradual erosion of the program.

Displaying aggressive behavior

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Bret Bielema thinks attitude is everything.

That is why the University of Wisconsin rookie head coach has opted three times already this season to disdain a field-goal attempt or a punt on fourth down and instead go for the first down.

Students Urged to Arrive Earlier for Badger Football Games

NBC-15

The Badgers pulled off another win at home Saturday afternoon.

UW football flashback: Louis Holland, Running Back, 1961-63

Capital Times

During Sunday’s film review of the victory over Western Illinois, University of Wisconsin football coach Bret Bielema singled out Tyler Holland for a solo tackle on kickoff coverage. It was the first video clip that Bielema highlighted. To be recognized in front of his teammates was pretty overwhelming for the 19-year-old Holland, a walk-on from Glen Ellyn, Ill., who was expecting to redshirt as a freshman. But he earned a role on special teams through his hustle and work ethic, and the proverbial Run-Through-A-Wall mentality that was an outgrowth of his upbringing.

Like father, like son.

“My dad has probably been one of the lifebloods on what I’ve decided to do with my life – as a person in general – and as far as school and athletics,” Holland said. “He has always been a great mentor for me.”
