Ironman: Brunold shines in Hawaii

Thomas Brunold and Karla Bock were the top male and female Madison-area finishers at the Ironman World Championships on Saturday in Kona, Hawaii.
Brunold, a UW chemistry professor, was 62nd overall in 9 hours, 49 minutes and 16 seconds, good for fifth in the men’s 35-39 age group.

Officials said security precautions are necessary at the two campus facilities in order to prevent the possibility of terrorist attacks.

UW NOTES: Beware falling concrete at Camp Randall

The renovation of Camp Randall Stadium is moving along smoothly, but a development last Saturday during the University of Wisconsin football game with Penn State illustrates there is work to be done.

A stadium employee noticed that small chunks of decayed concrete had fallen from a first-level concourse ceiling near the north end zone. That’s an area that will be upgraded during the final phase of the renovation, which is scheduled for completion in 2005.

Police cite Bucky for getting carried away

The UW-Madison graduate student had been waiting in the hockey ticket line outside the Kohl Center for nine days and was sleeping on a blanket, he said. Using a blanket on university property in this instance was apparently considered “camping” and against UW rules.

Aiming to halt students from “camping out” at the Kohl Center, the UW-Madison Campus Police will now be reprimanding individuals possessing tents, sleeping bags, pillows and other paraphernalia related to camping out. Folding chairs and television sets are still allowed.

The crew of Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler will return to Madison this weekend as ESPN’s pregame show College GameDay will broadcast live outside Camp Randall prior to the Badgers (3-0 overall) game against Penn State (2-1). This marks the second straight year, and the third time in the last five years, GameDay has traveled to Madison as the trio visited UW for its game against Purdue in 2003.

A year ago, Thomas Brunold took eighth place at the Ironman Wisconsin, beating out many seasoned pro triathletes in his first-ever attempt at the grueling race.

The University of Wisconsin “rolled out the red carpet” last Saturday, unveiling a new initiative that was supposed to create a friendlier environment to opposing fans at Badger football games. In response to several incidents of harassment that occurred last season, the Athletic Department and the administration created this initiative to make fans of teams visiting Camp Randall feel safe and welcome.
