Wisconsin men’s basketball coach Greg Gard, star Johnny Davis both earn 3 top Big Ten honors

Wisconsin State Journal

Johnny Davis earned Big Ten Player of the Year honors by both media and the conference’s coaches on Tuesday. UW’s Greg Gard won the Coach of the Year award in votes by both media and the conference’s coaches, while Brad Davison, Tyler Wahl and Chucky Hepburn also earned all-conference honors. That’s four Badgers players named to a team despite no player earning any recognition in the preseason.

50 Years of Title IX: Badgers reflect on the legislation’s impact on women’s sports

WKOW-TV 27

Cindy Bremser arrived on campus only a couple years after the implementation of Title IX, which forbid gender discrimination at federally funded institutions. Bremser was an All-American track runner at UW-Madison but wasn’t recruited by someone. She was recruited by something.”[It was] handwritten note that said they were looking for people to join the track team. There was a time and a date so I showed up,” said Bremser.

‘Everyone should get therapy’: Badgers coach Marisa Moseley isn’t afraid to talk about mental health

Wisconsin State Journal

Marisa Moseley is riding a roller coaster of emotions on the sidelines and it’s fascinating to watch. One minute, the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball coach is drop-kicking the air in celebration after one of her players makes a 3-pointer; the next, she’s twirling in frustration after a breakdown on defense leads to an open shot for the opponent.

Biggest Wisconsin volleyball home crowd ever? It may have happened in 2021

Wisconsin State Journal

The University of Wisconsin volleyball team saved its biggest for last in terms of home crowds on its way to its first NCAA championship. There were more than 7,000 people in the UW Field House for the regional final victory against Minnesota last December that sent the Badgers to the Final Four. Was it the biggest group ever to watch a UW volleyball home game? It’s hard to say definitively, but it’s at least in the top three.

‘Better late than never:’ Michael Finley deserves this rare Wisconsin men’s basketball honor

Wisconsin State Journal

Finley had a brilliant four-year career at UW and was selected 21st overall in the 1995 NBA draft, the first of the amigos off the board: Ford (Illinois Chicago) was taken five picks later and Boyce (Colorado) went in the second round. Finley played 15 seasons in the NBA, making two appearances in the All-Star Game and winning a title with the San Antonio Spurs as a role player in 2007. He’s been just as successful off the court and is now the assistant general manager/vice president of basketball operations for the Dallas Mavericks.

Michigan coach Juwan Howard, angry with late timeout by Wisconsin, slaps Badgers assistant Joe Krabbenhoft in postgame fight

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh wasted little time in grabbing for his phone.

After seeing Michigan and UW players and coaches engage in a potentially ugly brawl during the handshake line after the Badgers’ 77-63 victory Sunday at the Kohl Center, McIntosh called Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren.

Most troubling was that Michigan coach Juwan Howard hit UW assistant Joe Krabbenhoft in the face with an open hand.

TMJ4

UW-Madison has begun considering serving alcohol at athletic events, the Director of Athletics told WTMJ Radio.

When students and fans head to Camp Randall for Badger Football, they have not been able to purchase any form of alcohol. From beer to hard liquor, nothing was available. That, however, could soon change.

Passing the puck: Olympians, local hockey advocates create pathways for girls to join the sport

Wisconsin Public Radio

Quoted: “Each team, that’s 25 additional roster spots. So there’s more room at the top,” said Carla Pentimone, who played for the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 2009-11. Now she’s the owner and founder of Women’s College Hockey Recruiting, helping more than 250 young women navigate the transition to elite-level hockey.

“I have young girls who want to play hockey at Wisconsin or Minnesota, and they wear those sweatshirts. And I think being able to look at those teams that have had so much success and see what can be — the beautiful locker rooms and the amenities and even taking jets to play teams — as females, it’s just, it’s so cool,” Pentimone said.

Badger pride alive on the ice in Beijing

NBC-15

If Olympic teams could compete by college instead of country, Wisconsin Women’s Hockey could field its own roster. There are five Badger alumni competing for Canada in the Winter Games: Kristen Campbell, Emily Clark, Ann-Renée Desbiens, Sarah Nurse and Blayre Turnbull.

Former Badger quarterback Jack Coan, who wrapped up his college career at Notre Dame, will also make an appearance at the combine.

Wisconsin football posts job opening for defensive assistant coach

Wisconsin State Journal

The posting only designates that the position is for a defensive coach and does not list a position applicants would be coaching. The State Journal has reported that Bob Bostad — UW’s inside linebackers coach for the past five seasons — will be moving over to the offensive line to fill the void at that position left by Joe Rudolph’s departure.

‘Really special’: US goalie Alex Cavallini, 30, makes most of first Olympic start with shutout of Switzerland

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

lex Cavallini’s goaltending career has had several highlights.

Now she has added another milestone.

Before Sunday, Cavallini had an accomplished international career as a member of five world championship teams, most recently serving as the primary goalie during the 2019 title for the U.S. women’s hockey team. As a freshman with the Wisconsin Badgers, she was part of the 2011 national championship team, alongside current national team teammates Hilary Knight and Brianna Decker. Cavallini also holds the distinction of being the first woman drafted by the United States Hockey League (USHL).

How offensive coordinator Bobby Engram found right fit with Wisconsin football

Wisconsin State Journal

Bobby Engram wasn’t looking to leave his post as the Baltimore Ravens’ tight ends coach. He was in a strong organization, coaching one of the best players at the position in the league and learning from a highly respected coach. But the opportunity to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Wisconsin was too good to pass up.

Team USA Doesn’t Have a Starting Goalie. That’s By Design.

Wall Street Journal

Hensley has been perhaps the most consistent back-up in the world this fall, saving 93.2% of the 103 shots she faced over seven games in 2021. Unlike Cavallini and Rooney—who played college hockey at powerhouse teams from the University of Wisconsin and University of Minnesota, respectively—Hensley cut her teeth at tiny Lindenwood University, outside of St. Louis, Mo. She set just about every goaltending record there was for the Lions and parlayed that success into a spot on the U.S. national team in 2016.

She helped the Badgers win a national championship the next season. The pandemic cut short her senior season, but she was a top three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award, given to the top player in the country.

Abby Roque is first Native American to play U.S. women’s hockey team

The Washington Post

The players skated around Tuesday afternoon at Wukesong Sports Center without their helmets and — briefly, mercifully — without their masks, stopping and smiling for the camera that would capture the official team portrait of the 2022 U.S. Olympic women’s hockey team, not to mention their own camera phones that were tucked under pads on their hips or their shoulders. After the large group photo came the subsets: first-time Olympians in one shot, the goalies in another; University of Minnesota players followed by those from the University of Wisconsin — rivals in everyday life, teammates here.
