Noted: Marisa Moseley is in her first season as the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin. She came to Madison from Boston University, where she was head coach for two seasons. She led the Terriers to their first winning season in five years and was named Patriot League Coach of the Year. Moseley was an assistant coach for nine years under Coach Gino Auriemma at the University of Connecticut, a national women’s basketball powerhouse, following assistant coaching stints at Denver and Minnesota. She played for Boston University from 2000-2004.

It’s not every year a college athlete earns a fifth first-team All-American nod in a team sport. But these aren’t ordinary times, and Dana Rettke is no ordinary athlete.

The University of Wisconsin middle blocker received her fifth first-team nod from the American Volleyball Coaches Association, becoming the first athlete in NCAA volleyball history to be honored as such. Rettke reeled in her fourth plaudit as a senior earlier this year, then came back for a fifth season available to athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.

The University of Minnesota football team may have laid claim to Paul Bunyan’s Axe two weeks ago, but the University of Wisconsin women’s volleyball team came to the rematch wielding a broom.

For the third straight year, the Badgers are headed to the NCAA Final Four in volleyball after sweeping past the Golden Gophers, 25-18, 26-24, 25-22, Saturday night before an electric crowd at the UW Field House. Wisconsin will meet No. 1-ranked and undefeated Louisville in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday.

Badgers volleyball team earns No. 4 seed in NCAA tournament

The Badgers (25-3) received a No. 4 overall seed on Sunday when the tournament bracket was revealed and will play Colgate (18-9) in the first round at 7 p.m. Friday. The other first-round matchup at the Field House on Friday will pit Texas Tech (17-12) against Florida Gulf Coast (26-5) at 4:30 p.m.

Wisconsin linebacker Leo Chenal a finalist for Butkus Award

Chenal is the No. 18 Badgers’ leading tackler with 92 total tackles, and his 10.1 tackles per game ranks ninth in the FBS. He missed the first two games of the season after contracting COVID-19. Chenal has 15½ tackles for loss, with his 1.6 per game average ranking third in the FBS. He’s recorded 6½ sacks, four quarterback hits and two forced fumbles.

Construction to start on CR Future project Nov. 22

In one month, on Monday, Nov. 22, construction will begin on the CR Future project, a comprehensive renovation of the south end zone of Camp Randall Stadium that will introduce new premium seating and hospitality clubs to one of the best venues in collegiate athletics.

Math, science and football are all puzzles for Henningsen, a senior from Menomonee Falls.

Noted: During his senior year, he waits for offers from prospective college football programs, including one from the University of Wisconsin. (His father playfully warns him that, if he goes to Wisconsin, he’ll be “surrounded by line dancing and cowboy boots.”)

Then, he gets a call from “Coach Alvarez” — presumably Barry Alvarez, Wisconsin’s football coach and athletic director at the time. As the actor playing Colin gets on the phone, Kaepernick himself interjects: “This moment right here? This is one of the happiest moments of my life.” Then he finds out that Wisconsin isn’t going to make him a signing offer, either.

Alvarez retired as coach after the Capitol One Bowl on Jan. 2, 2006. Current Badgers coach Paul Chryst handled quarterback recruiting for Wisconsin that year. In February 2006, Kaepernick signed an offer with Nevada, the only school to make him one for football.

Staffing issue causes longer lines at Wisconsin Badgers’ football entry gates

Fans had to wait a little longer than normal Saturday as they attempted to enter Camp Randall Stadium for the University of Wisconsin’s football game against Army.

UW’s athletic department tweeted two hours before the game that “unforeseen circumstances specific to this game” created a situation in which not all the entry gates were fully staffed and fans were asked to arrive early.
