UW Athletics help East Side Youth Football Program replace equipment lost in a fire

University of Wisconsin-Madison Athletic Director Chris McIntosh and UW Head Football Coach Paul Chryst recently showed their support for the East Side Youth Football Program, helping them replace the football equipment that they lost in a tragic fire. On Sept. 14, they gave the young people a special surprise showing up at practice at Madison East High school to present equipment and speak to the young people.

Wisconsin men’s basketball to retire Michael Finley’s number

The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team announced Friday that it will hang Michael Finley’s No. 24 in the rafters of Kohl Center this season. UW will officially retire the number during a halftime ceremony this season, a date has not been announced. No. 24 will remain in circulation at UW, however.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the University of Wisconsin Marching Band took the field before Wisconsin’s season opener against Penn State Sept. 4, it marked the band’s first performance at a home football game in nearly two years.

It also was the first time drum major Joshua Richlen of Greendale got to do his thing at Camp Randall Stadium.

The 2020 and 2021 inductees were honored on Friday evening. They include former football star Gabe Carimi, hockey stars Meghan Duggan, John Byce, and Blake Geoffrion, basketball stars Jon Leuer, Mike Wilkinson and former Head Coach Bo Ryan, among others.

At one such game, University of Wisconsin’s home opener against Penn State, no vaccination proof or negative test was required. Masks were required indoors but only “strongly encouraged” in outdoor spaces. More than 76,000 people attended. The Madison, Wisconsin, metro area, home to more than 660,000 people has seen a steady increase in cases since mid-July and a positive test rate of 3.4 percent, according to Public Health Madison and Dane County.

The UW-Madison Badgers suffered a tough loss to Penn State at the first game day of the season, but there was still reason to celebrate. Saturday’s game marked the first time in nearly two years fans could cheer on the team from inside Camp Randall, after fans were kept out in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

University of Wisconsin officials remain determined to see full attendance at campus athletic venues during the 2021-2022 academic year.

“I am so excited for our fans to get back here in Camp Randall on Sept. 4 and get back to business,” athletic director Chris McIntosh told a crowd of several thousand fans who attended football practice Saturday morning.

Badgers football up to 90% vaccinated from COVID-19

The Badgers — who open the season against Penn State at 11 a.m. Sept. 4 at Camp Randall Stadium — were at about 85% in late July, according to head coach Paul Chryst. The Big Ten Conference has yet to announce how it will handle games that can’t be played due to a COVID-19 outbreak, but a decision is expected soon.
