The College Football Hall of Famer arrived in Madison in 1990 as the team’s new football coach and transformed a struggling program into an annual contender in the Big Ten, winning multiple Rose Bowls. Alvarez retired from coaching after the 2005 season, after serving in the dual roles of football coach and athletic director in 2004 and 2005.

Replacing Barry Alvarez as the University of Wisconsin’s athletic director will be both a tremendous opportunity and challenge. UW is looking for Alvarez’s successor after he announced Tuesday he was retiring after 17-plus years at the helm of the athletic department. With sweeping changes coming to the way college sports are run, UW’s next leader needs to be capable of leading the Badgers into a new era.

A 2017 Seattle Times investigation found the University of Washington inflated its rowing roster with dozens of women who were not actually on the team. The University of Wisconsin reported a staggering 176 women rowers in 2018, twice the size of its men’s team.

The effects are still clear today. NFL player Quintez Cephus sued the University of Wisconsin, Madison last month, alleging that being expelled from the university caused him to fall in the NFL draft. Cephus, who was eventually reinstated and now plays for the Detroit Lions, was still one of the lucky ones. Others, such as Clemson’s John Doe, were forced into anonymity or smeared publicly as rapists.

Cephus was suspended from the Badgers football team in August 2018 and was expelled from the University of Wisconsin-Madison for violating its nonacademic misconduct code as part of a Title IX investigation following his arrest on second- and third-degree sexual assault charges.
