When U.S. Paralympic sled hockey goaltender Steve Cash heard of the death of Jeff Sauer last month, he said one of the toughest realizations was that he could never make his coach proud again. Cash was one of many who spoke Thursday of their appreciation for Sauer at a celebration of the former University of Wisconsin men’s hockey coach’s life at the Kohl Center.

On this senior night, there was a big showing of support for Koenig, as he played his last game at the Kohl Center. Members of the Ho-Chunk Nation met for a watch party at the Double Tree in Madison Sunday evening, to watch the game and celebrate his career with Wisconsin.

The senior guard for the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team picked up his second foul 5 minutes into the game and was forced to watch from the bench for the rest of the first half as 22nd-ranked UW and red-hot Minnesota were locked up in a tight game Sunday at the Kohl Center.

Rose Lavelle’s whirlwind year continued Saturday evening when earned her first cap for the Women’s National Team as they battled England in the SheBelievesCup at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey. She became the 14th player to earn a first cap under head coach Jill Ellis.

Hayes will end his UW career among the all-time leaders in points, rebounds and assists, and there’s a chance he’ll end up being on the floor for more wins than any other player in program history. He’s also left his mark in community service and is on track to graduate in May with a degree in business finance and investment banking. “I have no idea where I’d be right now without (my stepfather),” Hayes said. “I wouldn’t be here, I can say that with 100 percent certainty. I call my mother the queen of the universe — she does a lot for me — but he’s really the reason why I’m able to sit here now.”

But Google didn’t know how how many donated items — warm clothing, camping supplies and dry food — filled the 18-foot trailer they drove, slowing them down for all the right reasons. They put a flag for their Ho-Chunk tribe on the trailer, so it could fly alongside them as they drove.
