Throughout his career as University of Wisconsin athletic director, Barry Alvarez has occasionally had to address the perception of short shrift for Wisconsin’s men’s hockey program from the department.

On Wednesday, his best answer to those critics may have been the three men sitting to his right on a stage set up on the Kohl Center’s sheet of ice.

Hutchins named Big Ten Swimmer of the Year

Following a standout season that culminated in a pair of top-10 finishes at the NCAA championships, Wisconsin junior Matt Hutchins was selected as 2016 Big Ten Men’s Swimmer of the Year, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Hutchins is the first male Big Ten Swimmer of the Year in Wisconsin program history. He is the first Badger to win the award on either the men’s or women’s side since Maggie Meyer in 2011.

Tsipis expected to be named UW women’s bball coach, resigns from GW

The State Journal is reporting that Jonathan Tsipis is expected to be named the next head coach of the Wisconsin women’s basketball program. The UW Board of Regents have scheduled a meeting for 5pm Tuesday to discuss the contracts for a new women’s basketball coach, along with a coach for the men’s hockey program.

Student injured in altercation seeks repercussions for UW athlete

A female University of Wisconsin student said administration is not doing enough after she was injured while intervening in an altercation last weekend.

The student, Elizabeth Olguin, was injured while intervening in an apparent act of partner violence March 11. She is calling on the university to issue a stronger response against Joseph McDonald-Hardy, the UW cross-country runner who was charged with a misdemeanor.

Pankowski receives NCAA Elite 90 Award

Wisconsin women’s hockey sophomore Annie Pankowski received the Elite 90 Award for having the highest cumulative grade-point average at the 2016 NCAA Women’s Hockey Frozen Four on Thursday.

A zoology major with a 3.85 cumulative grade point average, Pankowski received the award during a banquet at the Portsmouth Harbor Event Center.
