Badger womens hockey wins another WCHA title

The Wisconsin Badgers women’s hockey team defeated Minnesota State 8-1 at LaBahn Arena Sunday afternoon to clinch the WCHA regular season championship. It was the Badgers’ first regular season title since the 2011-12 season.

University of Wisconsin junior point guard Bronson Koenig was asked about the challenges of playing on the road. Koenig’s shooting numbers are significantly higher in home games this season, so it was fair to wonder about the difficulty of playing in an unfamiliar environment and, of course, using a different ball. “I’d say it’s a little overblown,” Koenig said. “Out of the Big Ten, the Under Armour balls at Maryland is the only place I really, really didn’t like the balls.”

Wisconsin swimming and diving collects four weekly Big Ten awards

As the Wisconsin swimming and diving program wrapped up its regular season at home last weekend, four Badgers earned Big Ten Conference weekly honors for their outstanding performances at the meet against in-state foe Green Bay.

UW’s pair of Danielle Valley and Cannon Clifton swept Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors, while Hazel Hertting earned women’s Big Ten Freshman of the Week and Clark Carter was chosen as men’s Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week.

During last Friday’s dual meet against Green Bay, four UW Natatorium pool records fell, including a pair set by Olympic gold medalists in 2003 and 2004.

UW Track and Field: McDonald named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week

After breaking the Wisconsin men’s track and field record in the indoor mile last Saturday at the Armory Collegiate Invitational, sophomore Morgan McDonald was named the Big Ten Conference Co-Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.

It marks the first time that McDonald has earned a Big Ten track athlete of the week award in his career, as he shares this week’s award with Penn State’s Isaiah Harris.

Team of UW-Madison researchers one of eight nationwide chosen for new concussion study

Hundreds of teams applied, but a team of UW-Madison researchers was one of only eight teams that were chosen in the Mind Matters Challenge co-sponsored by the NCAA and U.S Department of Defense.

Together these two entities have contributed more than $40 million towards the study of concussions. The UW-Madison team consists of Assistant Professor of Human Ecology Dee Warmath and Athletic Training and Kinesiology Professor Dr. Andrew Winterstein.

Over the next two years the team will work with some of the 2,500 student and club team athletes on UW-Madison campus. These students will help them test out new strategies for getting the word out on how dangerous ignoring a concussion can be.

UW women’s hockey holds open skate with fans

In 30 games this season the Badger women’s hockey team has only lost once. Nearly no one has been able to skate with the Badgers, except for the fans. Sunday at Vilas Park the Badgers held their annual open skate for the fans. Warmer temperatures made the ice more like slush, but the event still allowed fans to get pictures and autographs.

Badgers track and field: Morgan McDonald sets school record in mile

Sophomore Morgan McDonald took to the spotlight Saturday, breaking the University of Wisconsin record in the mile en route to a fourth-place showing in the invitational section at the Armory Track Invitational. The native of Sydney, Australia, clocked in at 3 minutes, 57.83 seconds, one tenth of a second faster than Austin Mudd’s 3:57.93 set in 2013.

Nigel Hayes clutch in crunch time

One of the biggest reasons for Wisconsin’s four-game winning streak is the clutch play of junior Nigel Hayes. In the final minutes, and into overtime against Indiana and Illinois, Hayes went a perfect 17 for 17 from the free throw line. According to UW, in the final five minutes of games this season Hayes is 87% (48-55) from the foul line.

After moving up the NCAA record books last weekend in the No. 2 Wisconsin women’s hockey team’s sweep of St. Cloud State, junior goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens was recognized not only as the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, but the American Sports Network Player of the Week, the organizations announced Tuesday.

UW Board of Regents to vote on deals of 3 football coaches

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents on Thursday is scheduled to consider amended compensation packages for head football coach Paul Chryst and Joe Rudolph, UW’s associate head coach/offensive coordinator.The board is also scheduled to consider the proposed compensation package for Justin Wilcox, who was recently hired as UW’s defensive coordinator.

Happ earns third-straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor

For the third-straight week, Ethan Happ of the Wisconsin men’s basketball team has earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, as announced by the league on Monday.

Recognized as Co-Freshman of the Week, Happ averaged 15.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game and helped lead the Badgers in wins over No. 19 Indiana and Illinois. The forward from Milan, Illinois, poured in a career-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting against the Hoosiers, pulling down eight rebounds and swiping a career-best four steals in UW’s overtime win in Madison.

Wilcox introduced at press conference as Badgers new DC

Justin Wilcox was introduced Monday at a press conference as the Badgers new defensive coordinator. Wilcox appeared with head coach Paul Chryst in front of the media four days after being officially hired. Wilcox replaces Dave Aranda who left UW for the same job at LSU. Wilcox comes to Wisconsin after being let go as USC’s defensive coordinator. Wilcox was one of several assistants let go after former USC head coach Steve Sarkisian was fired.

Justin Wilcox, who has spent the last 10 years as a defensive coordinator at Boise State, Tennessee, Washington and USC, has been named Wisconsin’s defensive coordinator pending University of Wisconsin Board of Regents approval, head coach Paul Chryst announced Thursday.

Former UW track & field star trains for Rio 2016 Olympics

Japheth Cato was the first-ever four-time Big Ten Title holder for the heptathlon, and he also still holds three school records for the University of Wisconsin.

Cato is now putting all his eggs in the decathlon basket and training to hopefully be a part of the US team during the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Badgers’ football game against Rutgers had Camp Randall’s smallest crowd in 10 seasons

There were just 48,289 tickets scanned as fans entered the Oct. 31 game, according to data provided by the Wisconsin athletic department. That means the stadium was nearly 40 percent empty. The announced attendance for Rutgers’ first appearance at Camp Randall as a Big Ten foe was 74,575. That figure represents the number of tickets sold or distributed for the game.

2017 ‘Super Saturday’ to include Wisconsin at Madison Square Garden

With the inaugural “Super Saturday – College Hoops & Hockey” doubleheader set for Saturday in New York City, the Big Ten announced future matchups for 2017, 2018 and 2019, with Wisconsin set to compete at legendary Madison Square Garden on Jan. 28, 2017.

The doubleheader features conference competition on an annual basis in late January or early February, with nine different Big Ten institutions competing in men’s basketball and/or hockey from 2016-19.

Next season, the Badgers will take on Rutgers in men’s basketball and Ohio State in men’s hockey.
