Dear Editor: The Kochs and Koch Industries have such an insidious hold on national conservatism that it is disingenuous for any responsible person at UW to say Koch sponsorship doesn’t matter. When the Kochs are writing the playbook for national politics, especially gubernatorial and legislative policies, does anyone see a connection between recent defunding of the university system and the allure of this lucrative sports package?

The Wisconsin Badgers’ Oct. 31 football game against Rutgers at Camp Randall Stadium will be sponsored by Koch Industries, the energy company run by billionaire political players David and Charles Koch. The game sponsorship is part of UW’s multi-year contract with a collegiate sports marketing company worth more than $111 million in guaranteed payments alone.

‘W’ Club considers merger with UW Athletics

In a letter to members, the leaders of the “W” Club said that the loss of a concessions contract in 2013 left a gap in the club’s operating budget, which prompted a discussion about whether fundraising should continue to be part of the club’s mission.

Fourth-annual #MakeBoPay raises record $694,117

It was another record-setting day at the fourth-annual “Shooting Down Cancer” event hosted by Wisconsin men’s basketball coach Bo Ryan and his wife, Kelly.

It took place at the Kohl Center Monday.

This year the UW-Madison student body helped raise Ryan’s donation to the American Cancer Society to $60,147. Combined with matching donations, the 2015 grand total was $694,117.

UW-Madison joins the “It’s on Us” campaign

At a press conference on Monday, the University of Wisconsin – Madison announced it is joining a campaign called, “It’s on Us.” The program is a national campaign aimed at stopping sexual assault.

During the press conference, the university stated it would begin playing a video during this weekend’s homecoming football game against Purdue University that will highlight the “It’s on Us” campaign. UW’s athletic program will play a key role in getting the message out to student’s on campus.

Badgers men’s basketball: ‘It’s On US’ campaign seeks to prevent sexual assault

What began last year as a White House campaign has spread to college campuses. Some UW student-athletes, including Brown, Corey Clement (football) and Sydney McKibbon (women’s hockey), along with UW athletic director Barry Alvarez, men’s hockey coach Mike Eaves and other staff, will appear in videos that will be shown at UW home games at Camp Randall, the Kohl Center and LaBahn Arena and shared through social media.

Nonprofit startup Chins Up uses tech to foster relationships between college athletes, kids

Chin Ups, an organization dedicated to fostering relationships between athletes and kids, was founded by Israel Lopez, a UW Law School grad. When Lopez was in middle school, Wisconsin Badgers football star Donnel Thompson sent him a box around Christmastime. That box included an autographed picture. “I never lost it. It had a tremendous effect on my life. Someone like that, someone who I was watching on TV, believed in me, for whatever reason … it changed my life.”

Badgers sports: UW unveils 10-year, $96 million deal with Under Armour

On Friday UW announced a 10-year, $96 million deal with Under Armour to provide apparel and footwear for the Badgers. The deal, which goes into effect next July, is one of the most lucrative in college sports. It surpasses Under Armour’s previous largest deal — a 10-year, $90 million contract with Notre Dame signed in 2014 — and is believed to be second only to Michigan’s 15-year, $169 million deal signed with Nike earlier this year.

Committee approves switching Badgers apparel to Under Armour

A UW Regents business and finance committee approved an agreement that would switch athletics apparel to Under Armour after 15 years under a contract with Adidas. The decision will go to the full Board of Regents Friday.

According to a resolution, Under Armour would outfit and equip all 23 Badgers teams. In the first year alone, the Baltimore-based company would pay the university’s athletics department $4 million cash in the first year, along with providing $3.3 million in uniforms, shoes and equipment.

Local Iowa fan attacked by Badger fan at Saturday’s game

Police are looking for a Badger fan who attacked a 15-year-old local Iowa fan at Saturday’s football game on Camp Randall according to a release from the UW-Madison Police Department.

Police say around 2:30 p.m. the teen wearing a Iowa Hawkeyes gear was exiting Camp Randall Stadium with friends when an unidentified man punched him in the face.

UW-Madison Police are asking for assistance from Badgers fans after a 15-year-old Iowa fan was attacked by a Badgers fan at the end of Saturday’s game.

They say around 2:30 p.m., the boy, wearing Iowa Hawkeyes gear, was exiting the stadium with friends when an unidentified man punched him in the face. The teen victim says he was mildly teasing his friend, who is a Badgers fan, about the Iowa win. That’s when the suspect approached him, striking him in the face. The attack was unprovoked and the suspect then fled into the crowd.
