Football coaches at Virginia Tech and Cincinnati created a stir last week when they said they were considering withholding some of the stipends for disciplinary reasons such as missing team meetings, committing academic fraud or getting called for a personal foul penalty. Some schools have been accused of inflating their cost of attendance estimates for all students to be able to use a higher value of the new scholarship money as a recruiting tool for athletes.

A few days after Wisconsin’s 68–63 loss to Duke in the NCAA championship game, the school’s athletic director, Barry Alvarez, walked into coach Bo Ryan’s office for what he thought would be a standard, end-of-season wrap-up meeting. Ryan, however, delivered a message that was far from standard: He was strongly considering retiring at the age of 67. “I was surprised,” Alvarez said in a telephone interview. “People have asked me how much longer he’s going to coach, and I always said you’re gonna have to wheel him out of here on a gurney.”

nbc15.com

Quoted: A little over a $100 per helmet, [Riddells are] just as good as those newer models that cost sometimes over $500, according to Tim McGuine at University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine and Public Health.

“There’s a lot of misinformation out there that if we just have these athletes wear these helmets, that are designed differently or something, they’re gonna have fewer concussions. And from a simplistic model that makes sense, but concussions are multi-factorial,” said McGuine.

Chryst appreciates when Alvarez observes practice

WKOW TV

Barry Alvarez said “no mas,” when asked if he would ever coach again after the 2015 Outback Bowl. Though the former coach never strays too far from the sideline. The UW athletic director has made several stops to week one of fall camp, observing the team and new head coach Paul Chryst. This could be seen as pressure for Chryst with his boss looking over his shoulder, but that’s not at all the case.
