When Vinnie Ferguson  died last month in New York, at 76, his obituary, and the news stories prompted by his past prominence as a boxer, all mentioned the NCAA boxing championship Ferguson won in Madison in April 1956. Ferguson won the individual title at 156 pounds, and the Badgers also won the team championship, their eighth and final title.

In an attempt to fortify recruiting efforts in the Midwest, University of Wisconsin football coach Gary Andersen is looking to work multiple summer camps at sites outside Madison starting in 2015. Andersen would prefer to have prospects participate in his instructional camps at Camp Randall, but that?s not always feasible. As such he?s looking to hook up with a small college or two that will put him and his assistants in front of potential recruits in Minnesota and, perhaps, Illinois.

Defenseman Jack Dougherty, an incoming freshman by way of the U.S. National Team Developmental Program, was taken in the second round (No. 51 overall) by Nashville. Defenseman Matt Berkovitz, who played at Ashwaubenon High School last season and is projected to enroll at UW in 2015-16, was tabbed by Anaheim in the fifth round (123rd overall). Center Matt Ustaski, an incoming freshman who played last season with Langley of the British Columbia Hockey League, was selected by Winnipeg in the seventh round (192nd overall).

Other press reports, dating back to the 1960s, credit Roberts ? today an emeritus professor of physical education at UW-Madison ? and her graduate students with research that helped launch the proliferation of ?soccer style? placekickers in American football.

Badgers men’s hockey: Max Zimmer commits to UW for 2017

Zimmer is a 5-foot-10, 165-pounder who will be a junior at Wayzata (MN) High School in the fall and turn 17 in October. He led the team in scoring last season with 30 points (10 goals, 20 assists) in 25 games. One of the top prospects in Minnesota, he said he?s looking to arrive in Madison in 2017-18.
