UW students to install solar panels in Puerto Rico

A group of at least 30 students from University of Wisconsin-Madison has started Solar Para Niños, a project to implement solar energy in Puerto Rico.The students plan to design and install a distributed solar system at Hogar Albergue para Niños Jesus de Nazaret, a nonprofit shelter for physically abused children located outside the city of Mayaguez.The shelter serves newborns to 11-year-olds, and currently hosts 14 children. “These are kids who have been taken from their homes who have had horrible home lives,” said Allie Stephens, a project manager from the university’s Engineers Without Borders chapter.

Holder, who heads the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, will participate in “discussions” with Milwaukee-based Black Leaders Organizing for Communities and on the UW-Madison campus on Friday to “talk about activism and engagement in this year’s elections.”

In his column on Sunday, “Killers on campus,” Michael Arntfield tries to tie a series of unsolved murders of young women at UW-Madison to the student protests against the war in Vietnam. His thesis — that three serial killers were able to operate because “the white noise of activism and political agitation … obfuscate(d) their presence” is reprehensible and ludicrous.

Noted: When then-President Hu Jintao visited Chicago in 2011, the University of Wisconsin-Madison CSSA bused in Chinese students, excited about a free trip to the city and a chance to glimpse the president. The association also surprised the students at the conclusion of the trip with a small cash payment. The CSSA president told students not to speak to the media about the money, according to one student who attended. The association did not respond to a request for comment.

Top Producers of Peace Corps Volunteers, FY 2017

The nine top producers of undergraduate-alumni Peace Corps volunteers in the 2017 fiscal year were all state flagship institutions. The smallest colleges that produced the most Peace Corps volunteers that year were Agnes Scott College, in Georgia, and Cornell College, in Iowa. Both had fewer than 1,000 undergraduate students in the fall of 2016. UW is #1.
