UW-Madison, students develop programs for freshmen to address campus climate

Stories of social injustice filled student newspapers’ pages throughout the previous academic term. Incoming students will not only be made aware of these issues, but they will also be provided with tools to discuss them and similar topics in order to diminish occurrences of discrimination. The university will attempt to instill a sense of acceptance in new students before they even step on campus.

For example, a group of graduate students in UW-Madison’s Science Hall have been swapping lunches — or meals — for years. Francis Eanes, a 28-year-old doctoral student at the Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies, joined the group last October when there was an opening.

Noted: Since being elected governor of Wisconsin in 2010, Scott Walker has made repeated cuts to that state’s system of 13 universities; $250 million in cuts are included in the 2015–17 state budget. “It all trickles down,” University of Wisconsin Press director Dennis Lloyd admitted, disclosing that the state previously funded about 10% of the press’s $3.6 million budget, but cut that sum by 2% in 2015–17. “It could have been better; it could have been worse,” Lloyd observed.

UW-Madison projects go before Board of Regents

UW-Madison hopes to get approval from the Board of Regents on a couple of projects later this week.One of the projects is a $47 million renovation of Witte Hall. The university plans to replace heating and electrical systems, add new elevators and make other safety improvements, among other fixes.

And so we ask once again: should we rethink the value of fraternities on U.S. college campuses? Is it finally time to acknowledge these organizations are an anachronism at best and a breeding ground for intolerance and bigotry at worst?

The suspension of Sigma Alpha Epsilon for UW-Madison is but the latest example of an American college fraternity exposed for racially insensitive behavior.
